Renaming Wikisource and Wikibooks modules

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

I find that the titles of articles at Wikibooks and Wikisource are clashing; different languages often use the same spelling for the same word. Following suggestions from mav, I humbly propose a system like this:

At Wikibooks:

  • Latin (English version) => Latin for English speakers
  • Latin (French version) => Latin pour francophones
  • Latin (Danish version) => Latin for dansktalende
  • ...and so on (thankfully, most words and names don't overlap)
Note that Latin pour francophones and Latin for English speakers will in general have different content; they won't just be translations of one another. Contrast this with Wikisource items that are translated from one original into many languages. Here, I think different titles make sense, corresponding to the content change. Fair point. I agree that this isn't really as big a problem at Wikisource - the only two conflicts there I'm aware of are the example below and the Bible. But, for the sake of completeness, I thought I should include it. -- Kwekubo 00:53, 13 Apr 2004 (UTC)

The same idea for Wikisource:

  • Unto This Last - M. K. Gandhi (English version) => Unto This Last - M. K. Gandhi (English version)
  • Unto This Last - M. K. Gandhi (French version) => Unto This Last - M. K. Gandhi (version française)
Here, I think the various articles should keep their canonical title (whatever it is in the target language -- this may change as it is translated from language to language), with metalinks to versions of the same in other languages (cf. the interlang links in Wikipedia).
In the case above, I should think that "Unto This Last" is only the English title, and that there is a different title in French. Regardless, the languaged-designation should not be munged into the title; it should be implicit, but noted explicitly on the backend (in the database) for the purposes of linking the translations of an original to one another.
So in the rare cases where both English and French versions have the same title, disambiguation would be appropriate; Unto This Last could be a disambig page, linking to both Unto This Last (English) and Unto This Last (française). Sj 04:52, 12 Apr 2004 (UTC)
That's exactly what I was thinking. And using just the language name is a better option, now I see it on the screen. -- Kwekubo 00:53, 13 Apr 2004 (UTC)

I posted this to Wikisource. So OK. I moved the French version to the proposed new name. Yann 19:39, 10 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Of course, if you have a better system, add it here.

To put some sort of timeframe on this, I suggest discussing until 20th April, and then we can see how things develop (perhaps a vote). -- Kwekubo 00:37, 10 Apr 2004 (UTC)

How about using titles like Latin:English or Latin:Français? Perl 12:04, 12 Apr 2004 (UTC)

  • That looks a bit confusing to me, and as Sj pointed out it doesn't make it as clear that the content is different. -- Kwekubo
