Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom Tanzania

The Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom program integrates Wikipedia and the UNESCO Media and Information Literacy (MIL) framework. This program provides teachers with the knowledge and skills needed to use Wikipedia as a pedagogical tool to foster critical reading skills, to raise awareness about knowledge gaps, and to start their journey as Wikipedians with a high sense of responsibility and collaboration. The program contains 3 modules that are aligned with the MIL framework components and makes direct connections between Wikipedia practices and teaching methodologies. Each module includes a Teacher’s Guide with practical activities, reflection questions, and two training sessions.

Program Goals

  1. By July 2022, 40 teachers who have participated in the program would better understand Wikipedia and how it can be used as a teaching tool in their classrooms.
  2. By July 2022, more than 35 of these teachers will have received a certificate of completion showing they are able to implement new classroom strategies to foster media and information literacy using Wikipedia.
  3. By the end of the program, 35 teachers will be able to integrate what they have learned from the program in their classrooms to teach students.
  4. By the end of the program, 35 teachers will be good advocates of the Reading Wikipedia in the classroom program; they will be able to spread the word about the program through their teachers’ networks.
