Abstract: This session will present a plan for selecting about 100 articles on LGBT topics which we present for translation and distribution as global culture.

People all over the world consult Wikipedia on all topics, including for LGBT+ issues. Perhaps people with interest in LGBT+ topics consult Wikipedia more, because Wikipedia can be a source of information which people want to read personally and which they might otherwise have trouble finding. Before the Internet most people in the world had no access to LGBT information. Now that there is Wikipedia, people can access content in English, but perhaps not in other languages, until and unless we translate some content in Wikipedia.

We do not have the resources to translate everything. Maybe if we selected about 100 articles which seem the most important and globally relevant, then we could recommend those for translation and establish a global LGBT canon of information and culture which all people should share.

At Wiki99 there is a project to set up lists of 99, or about 100, articles in a topic to suggest for translation. There is a Wiki99/LGBT+ list, but it is difficult to select topics which are globally relevant. Some topics seem more universal, like perhaps LGBTQ (Q17884), homosexuality (Q6636), and same-sex marriage (Q17422). Probably we should include some biographies, events, and culture-specific concepts, but if we know we have limited resources to translate only about 100 articles, then how can we attempt to represent global and cultural diversity? What concepts really are universal, which are culture specific, and how can we present some globally diverse topics in a curated collection?
