Proposals for closing projects/Deletion of wikimania2005

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

This is a proposal for closing and/or deleting a wiki hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation. It is subject to the current closing projects policy.

The proposal is rejected and the project will not be deleted.

  • A Language Committee member provided the following comment:
There is no support for the proposal and it is based on false premises (that closing the wiki would save server space, that the wiki's content could be imported to Incubator, that importing the content to Incubator would still save space, ...). --MF-W 02:34, 13 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Type: 2 (non-routine proposal)
  • Proposed outcome: project deletion
  • Proposed action regarding the content: no new content since late 2005. Remaining content will be moved to the Wikimedia Incubator before deletion.
  • Notice on the project: could not send due to semi-private status. Project already closed in late 2005 so no notice is needed.
  • Informed Group(s): none.

Project is already closed, and I feel this will become an unnecessary space hog on our server space in the future if we don't transfer to other projects for preservation.--RIP iPad 2 (talk) 18:57, 5 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I could not notify the project due to it's semi-private status.--RIP iPad 2 (talk) 19:09, 5 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Where should the content go? Also please add the template for this kind of requests. --MF-W 19:14, 5 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Added template. Content will be moved to the Wikimedia Incubator before deletion.--RIP iPad 2 (talk) 19:15, 6 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It's already been closed. I'm proposing it for deletion.--RIP iPad 2 (talk) 21:57, 6 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia Incubator is supposed to be "the place where potential new linguistic editions for existing open content projects supported by the Wikimedia Foundation have their own wikis". The Wikimania2005 content doesn't fit that description, so I don't think Incubator is an appropriate place for it. Moreover, Incubator is open for editing, whereas the Wikimania2005 content should probably be preserved as an archive. Mr. Granger (talk) 22:23, 6 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The images should be preserved on Commons. I'm going to try to find a place where the rest of the content should be preserved.--RIP iPad 2 (talk) 23:32, 6 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I think the Wikimania Team wiki should preserve the remaining content not fit for Commons.--RIP iPad 2 (talk) 23:39, 6 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I can tell, the Wikimania Team wiki is not publicly viewable, so it doesn't seem like a good choice to me either. Mr. Granger (talk) 23:49, 6 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
And you don't have to worry about server space since the WMF can buy more servers for that. The price of a server is getting cheaper... Pokéfan95 (talk) 01:01, 7 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose: We don't delete projects because they're a "hog on our server space". The amount of space that this wiki takes up is so beyond trivial. The dumps are less than 10MB. Suggest closing this proposal. ^demon (talk) 03:17, 11 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose As per ^demon, Ajraddatz and Mr. Granger, all points for the project closure are moot.--176.104.110.11 17:26, 11 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose and suggest closure of this request before this, too, becomes a drain on our server space. --Rschen7754 18:36, 11 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
