Closure of Norwegian Wikinews
[edit]- (The following comment is outdated and the site is now showing significant recent activity.) --Coppertwig 01:52, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
- If you by “significant“ mean a whopping two new stories in 2007 (one of them by myself), yes, then there is “significant activity.“ Kjetil r 22:02, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
This project is dead. The main story on the front page is from July, and it is close to spam. no.wikinews has no active admins, and practically no users. I suggested to close it at it's Village Pump two weeks ago, and the response was mostly in favor of closing it. --Kjetil r 22:42, 8 November 2006 (UTC) (The link to no.wikinews has already been removed from the no.wikipedia frontpage [1] --Kjetil r 01:51, 9 November 2006 (UTC))
- I support the closure of the "dead" norwegian wikineews if there is a general agreement about that, but alltought the matter has been briefly discussed on the nynorsk wikipedia, has this been discussed on Tinget, the bokmål villagepump? At least I can't see it has been. The Nynorsk wikipedia linked a news section to it too try boost the interest, I think a similar thing could have been tried at the bokmålwiki. I believe this might have led to the situation where a lot of writers using nynorsk got pushed away from a coupple of those few writers writing bokmål. Another thing was the lack of moderating. One of them admitting he lost interest in the project, the second busy with moderating wikipedia and the last one dissapeared from all wikiprojects, as a writer of two articles myself I asked on the newsdesk how to get the stories on the frontpage. It never got answered, noone knew, and everyone lost interest. Then my discussionpage got sprayed with agressive insults, and I lost the final interest in the project aswell. So allthough I will support the closure of this wikinewsproject, I have to ask if everything has been done yet to avoid this to become yet another failed co-op between our two written languages. - A link to the discussion at no.wikinews was provided at no.wikipedia:Tinget in no:Wikipedia:Tinget#Wikinytt. Another discussion can be found at no:Wikipedia:Tinget#Wikinytt_. --Kjetil r 01:55, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
- I usually have high regards to you as contributor and admin, but that really was desperate! :) The first topic you mention covers what to do with the outdated wikinews section on the bokmål/riksmål wikipedia, no poll, no mention of even shutting down wikinews before your announced your proposal two days ago, that is the second. AndersL 00:12, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
- The header of the first topic was a link to the closing proposal at Wikinews. It was not especially clear, I can agree to that. --Kjetil r 00:32, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

- I disagree with Kjetil. A substantial amount of work has been put into this project, and as time passes by, I believe more contributors will join in. Btw, the last main story dates September 9, not July. --62.107.74.231 00:45, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
- Actually the last main story was made September 20th, and linked to from the news section on the nynorsk wikipedia mainpage at least, probably the same issue I had about not being able to publish it on the wikinews mainpage, I guess. Also yet an news-story was ritten yesterday. Seems like there is people interested in keeping it alive. AndersL 00:12, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
I agree and support the proposal to close the Norwegian Wikinews down. Kph 01:44, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
Some users have suggested that there is a problem that both the written forms of the Norwegian language may be used in no.wikinews. An alternative to closure can be to split the Norwegian Wikinews into no.wikinews for bokmal and nn.wikinews for nynorsk (and of course find some users and new admins who are actually interested in contributing). --Kjetil r 01:40, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
- I don't believe the problem is the languages used, this works well at other Norwegian news portals like nrk.no, and I think it would not be a good idea to create two new Wikinews editions in Norwegian. Kph 01:44, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
- I agree, the userbase for just one seems to be small enough.AndersL 00:12, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
I support the motion to close the Norwegian Wikinews. I do however look forward to a time in the not too distant future when a sufficiently determined and numerous group of individuals move to give this project a fresh start. __meco 09:14, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
- If it close now, it will be quite hard to re open it, so thats not gonna happen. This is why we in the first place should have at least tried to find out how many people wants the norwegian wikinews to stay alive, not how many who wants to close it. This process has gone completely backwards. As long as there is people who wants to contribute to a Norwegian wikinews, they should be allowed that, not discouraged from it as what happened on newsdesk lately. For me it doesnt look like this is a proposal, but rather a demand that this project should be closed, especially as the nynorsk community have not been involved in this before a coupple of days before this "proposal". Has anyone even bothered to ask Eirik or Kurtbert the third admin about their views? As moderators and beurocrat they still have their positions and Eirik is easy to catch. But no, you are just busy demotivating anyone who shows an twelve o' clock interest in the project. P***es me off, really. AndersL 00:12, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
- The nynorsk community not involved? I suggested the closure two weeks ago at Wikinews:Desken. Users at nn.wikipedia discovered it at October 30th ([2]). No nn.wikipedia users objected.
- As Eirik and Kurtbert are admins at Wikinews, I take it for granted that they have a look at Wikinews:Desken every now and then. Apparently they did not, which suggests that they are not really interested in participating. --Kjetil r 02:18, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
- I also notice that the Wikinews section was removed from the nn.wikipedia main page earlier today. --Kjetil r 02:20, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

Support the proposal. I think there would be more of a chance to keep such a site active if one went for a common Scandinavian project, like the one that was proposed a long time ago and got support, but mysteriously no implementation... -- Olve 23:23, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
- Now that is someone who at least is trying to look for solutions. A scandinavian wikinews, if I read you right, would be a great idea. But what about if there already is seperate scandivanian projects. I havent checked if there is but couldnt that make some troubble? AndersL 00:12, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
- I agree with Olve. There are no really active Scandinavian projects, so it would not be a problem to merge them into a common one. The only problem, if it is a problem at all, is the language interface, which should be possible for the readers to change in an easy way. Kph 06:03, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
- A Scandinavian Wikinews is probably the best solution at this moment. The Swedish Wikinews only has a little more activity than the norwegian in periods. Having a joint scandinavian Wikinews effort as a real alternative to the Norwegian Wikinews, I would vote for that.

- Oppose. Although feeble, as it stands todays, I still believe in a future in Norwegian Wikinews. Given all the fuzz there has been about the Bokmål/Nynorsk joint venture, the likelihood that a Scandinavian Wikinews will come to frutition seems utterly remote. I'd gladly participate as an admin on the Norwegian Wikinews (already being admin on Norwegian Wikipedia and Wikiquote). --Lipothymia 20:44, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
- oppose. A lot of work has been done to make this project work, and if the result of this debate is that a few persons are willing to work for a norwegian wikinews, I think they should be allowed to do so.
/ Kurtber™|Ordskifte 18:06, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
- Oppose the closure as the wikinews projects take time to produce results and are long and cumbersome projects. Please let them establish themselves and will see in a year or two. Take for examples Spanish or French wikinewses where news doesn't get published every day and the projects are still happening. Please give it time. Lincher 20:12, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
- Oppose. I asked this many times: What happen with the existing articles at no:wikinews?? I like the project and will maybe contribute more from now. NorwegianMarcus 11:10, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
- Wikinews needs editors, not inactive user opposing the closure. I suggest that you start writing stories. Kjetil r 19:03, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
- Oppose. The project has multiple significant news articles dated this month. It is therefore an active project and should not be deleted. --Coppertwig 01:52, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

- Comment: Norwegian Wikinews is an active site. But, as far as I can see, it does not have signs on each page pointing to this vote, the way Simple English Wikiquote does. This vote, taking place in English on a remote hard-to-find page somewhere on Meta seems to me like something out of the first chapter of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. --Coppertwig 02:15, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
- Amen. I couldn't have said it better! --Roberth 08:30, 30 January 2007 (UTC)
- Oppose. There are some users participating. --Tone 17:37, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
- It is not “some”, but somewhere between ½ and one. Hardly a user base. Kjetil r 22:03, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
