PhilWiki Community/Education/Localization and Contextualization

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

The Localization and Contextualization of Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom - Teacher's Guide Modules of the Education Team, through collaboration of teachers, writers and volunteers, is an initiative project of PhilWiki Community. The Community believes that Wikipedia, among other Wikimedia projects, belongs in Education hence it engages in projects, programs and activities that promote free, responsibly open-content resources and reference materials, through academia among other entities. It supports active learning and the Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom pilot program of the Education Team of Wikimedia Foundation.

WikiTutorial is a project that was first conducted from November 2018 to June 2019 which involved participants in editing tutorials as well as engagement in the training and organizing of activities. During this period, the participants along with some educators and students learned the basic editing and got familiarized with the Wikimedia movement in the Philippines. In its two other outreach activities in 2019, around a hundred teachers from the Division of Catanduanes and university librarians in Naga City learned how to navigate Wikipedia and to add references to its articles. In 2017 when Bikol Wikipedia turned 10 years, the Community conducted editing workshops at Ateneo de Naga University and Central Bicol State University of Agriculture as part of the celebration.
