Non-development tasks for developers

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Warning: Requests left here have a high likelihood of never being noticed. All software-, bug-, and configuration- related issues should be filed in the bug tracker at http://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/

Although developers are given server access to assist them with developing the software and maintaining the hardware, there are a number of non-development tasks which can only be carried out by people with server access. Users of Wikimedia projects rely on developers to carry these out and they request assistance on various pages across the projects. This page brings together a selection of the tasks which developers can help with when they need a break from real development work. These tasks may be a good way for developers to avoid wikistress caused by too much time looking at code.

  1. Language files to be updated
  2. en:Wikipedia:Changing attribution for an edit
  3. Changing username (See also English requests)
  4. Server outage message
  5. Fundraising site notice
  6. Requests for logos
  7. Requests for queries
  8. en:Wikipedia:SQL query requests
  9. Non-compliant site coordination

If you have a request for a developer not covered by the pages linked above, please add it below. This is specifically for non-development tasks. Bug reports and feature requests should go to our bug tracker, MediaZilla.

Stolen username

[edit]

q:user:Guanaco was taken by w:user:Michael around Aug 16 to make a bunch of edits. I would like to edit Wikiquote with the same name that I use on other wikis, and I don't want these edits attributed to me. The edits need to be reassigned and the email address needs to be set to "guanaco@cox.net" so that I can reset the password and claim the account. Guanaco 20:46, 17 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Ditto User:Francs2000 was taken by w:user:Michael for a similar reason earlier this year. I have created this as a user name on all the other main wikis for when I do transwiki-ing from en: and would like to keep the same user name on meta. Please let me know at en: if you need my email address, I won't put it up here in case of spammers. -- 217.41.241.203 14:40, 22 Oct 2004 (UTC) (Francs2000)

Maybe not quite the same case, but similar. Is there any hope, doctor? Marc Girod 09:26, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Change of project namespace

[edit]

Hi

[edit]

Hello, I am not sure of the techical terms so I'll put my question as a lay person. Is it possible to use the hindi translation for the user interface at hi.wikipedia.org for hindi wiktionary, hindi wikiquote, hi wikibooks etc.? That way we have to translate the common terms and pages only once? p.s.and then some

e.g. any changes made to http://hi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:All_system_messages could be reflected for all the other hindi projects. I guess it will cause a problem with the 'about' page - is there a way to get around that?

Please let me know if it is possible. Thanks, Shree 23:22, 28 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Months and weekday names translation at ka:

[edit]

Hi there. Regarding the Language.php at ka: (georgian), I would like to change just the month and weekday names. Could someone please do it for me? I have a question though. What are these names used for? I saw they are used for CURRENTMONTHNAME and CURRENTDAYNAME. Are they used for anything else? This is because, while names of months and weekdays are nominative when used alone, when expressing dates, it's more usual to have to use them in dative, and so they have different spelling. Did you predict anything like this? Do you have an alternative naming for such cases in other languages?

In case you can only use one name for each month/weekday AND they are used for something else (like a script that creates months and dates pages automatically), please use the "Normal names". If it's just for for CURRENTMONTHNAME and others, please use the second ("Dative names"). If it's possible two have both names, that's even better :).

Normal names (like the name for an article called "January"):

  • January - იანვარი
  • February - თებერვალი
  • March - მარტი
  • April - აპრილი
  • May - მაისი
  • June - ივნისი
  • July - ივლისი
  • August - აგვისტო
  • September - სექტემბერი
  • October - ოქტომბერი
  • November - ნოემბერი
  • December - დეკემბერი
  • Monday - ორშაბათი
  • Tuesday - სამშაბათი
  • Wednesday - ოთხშაბათი
  • Thursday - ხუთშაბათი
  • Friday - პარასკევი
  • Saturday - შაბათი
  • Sunday - კვირა

Dative names (When stating a date):

  • January - იანვარს
  • February - თებერვალს
  • March - მარტს
  • April - აპრილს
  • May - მაისს
  • June - ივნისს
  • July - ივლისს
  • August - აგვისტოს
  • September - სექტემბერს
  • October - ოქტომბერს
  • November - ნოემბერს
  • December - დეკემბერს
  • Monday - ორშაბათს
  • Tuesday - სამშაბათს
  • Wednesday - ოთხშაბათს
  • Thursday - ხუთშაბათს
  • Friday - პარასკევს
  • Saturday - შაბათს
  • Sunday - კვირას

As for the short name, we can use the first 3 letters of each, without any problem on what kind of sentence we're in:

  • January - იან
  • February - თებ
  • March - მარ
  • April - აპრ
  • May - მაი
  • June - ივნ
  • July - ივლ
  • August - აგვ
  • September - სექ
  • October - ოქტ
  • November - ნოე
  • December - დეკ
  • Monday - ორშ
  • Tuesday - სამ
  • Wednesday - ოთხ
  • Thursday - ხუთ
  • Friday - პარ
  • Saturday - შაბ
  • Sunday - კვი
You can do that by requesting sysop access on your wiki, and editing the interface, which can be found at this page. Thunderhead 16:02, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Blocking a site which is stealing bandwidth

[edit]

The mirror http://www.2buygood.com/wiki is updating live, and thereby stealing bandwidth. Please block them. wikipedia:User:JesseW 17:44, 23 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Has been done. 134.10.21.179 05:27, 25 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Also [1][2][3][4] are updating live and stealing bandwidth. Please block them. --61.196.67.70 07:14, 17 Mar 2005 (UTC)

It seems a dev has blocked them as well. Thunderhead 16:01, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Strange article in database

[edit]

In the thai wikipedia there is an article names Als:Chimie, which isn't accessible at all as it always interpreted as the interwiki to als. It only shows up in the th:Special:Ancientpages listing. I guess it can be simply deleted. Ahoerstemeier 08:13, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)
