Movement Strategy Implementation Planning for Hausa communities
The “Wikimedia Movement Strategy 2030,” is a movement wide strategic plan that outlines a set of ambitious objectives drafted by the community to guide and grow the reach and impact of the Wikimedia movement into the future. The goal is, by 2030, 'Wikimedia will become the essential infrastructure of the ecosystem of free knowledge, and anyone who shares our vision will be able to join us.' Being one of the recognised affiliates in the movement, Hausa Wikimedians User Group is working on a strategic plan in line to implementing the Wikimedia Movement Strategy 2030 initiatives with a particular focus on cluster C 'Invest in Skills and Leadership Development'. The project aims to bring stakeholders of the Usergroup together to work and collaborate in formulating the necessary steps and tactics to understand and identify the barriers hindering effective leadership and skills development within their communities through research and collecting data on volunteer needs and priorities, peer learning etc, and to map out plans to address those challenges as well as setting up pace and direction for the User-group.
History
[edit]In August 2019, the Hausa Wikimedians User Group (HaWUG) was officially launched as a recognised Wikimedia Affiliates of the Wikimedia Foundation with a mission to support, grow and promote Wikimedia projects in Hausa language and topics related to its people, culture, society, history and beyond. And also help, encourage and educate Hausa-speaking users and communities on the importance of open source, knowledge sharing and other educational initiatives through the training and events which the group organizes..
Today, this group of dedicated and passionate Wikimedians hails from Nigeria, Niger, Ghana, Cameroon and other countries across the world. Currently, the Hausa Wikimedians User Group members dedicate their free time to writing, translating and improving content in their language as well as organizing meetups to support and grow the movement among Hausa-speaking communities around the world.
Project Goals
[edit]By the end of the project, we will be able to prepare the following strategies and implement effective leadership plan.
- Establish a methodology that maps assets and needs and generates aggregated data for deploying leadership and skills development initiatives based on real needs.
- Establish a service that facilitates connecting/matching peers across the Movement for teaching and learning skills (e.g. peer-learning, networking, and pooling of information from partners and allies).
- Encourage a diversity of methods, including training, mentoring, consulting, online learning, peer-to-peer support, and events.
- Increase the number and diversity of our contributors on the Wikimedia projects and create/improve Wikimedia contents in Hausa, Fulfulde and Kanuri languages.
- Raise awareness of the mission and work of Hausa Wikimedians User Group so that others would be able to join us and or support our work.
Objectives
[edit]The following are our main project objectives
- Understand and identify the challenges and barriers hindering effective leadership and skills development within our communities in order to address them
- Raise general awareness about the Wikimedia projects in areas we are not currently well known and the movement activities on open source and free knowledge projects.
- We will work to retain and regain the interest of our members who have left the projects due to lack of skills and or understanding of the Wikimedia projects
- Increase diversity and inclusion of our editing community by reaching out to far away audiences and involving them into our activities.
- Uncover and tackle the negative perception about Wikipedia through outreach activities by reaching out to people who might have no idea what the projects are all about and to understands the objections that are keeping them away from editing and participating in the Wikimedia movement.
