Reverted update

[edit]

Split from Talk:Meetup/London/105:

@LoopZilla: I fixed the error by making this revert of an edit to Module:String by Pathoschild (talk · contribs). --Redrose64 (talk; at English Wikipedia) 13:46, 10 April 2016 (UTC)
It may be worth fixing the error instead; otherwise we'll no longer be able to update the modules. —Pathoschild 13:58, 10 April 2016 (UTC)
There was no error until you changed the module. --Redrose64 (talk; at English Wikipedia) 15:06, 10 April 2016 (UTC)

@Redrose64: our String module is mirrored from enwiki's String module, and it's periodically updated from that main version (see the updates in January 2014, January 2015, and mine in April 2016). While never updating again would prevent the expression error in Template:Sub, it'd be better to fix the error so we can benefit from the continued maintenance of the module. —Pathoschild 18:59, 10 April 2016 (UTC)

The desire to keep Module:String and en:Module:String synchronised is laudable, but this rather relies on the templates invoking it also being the same as regards parameters and function. The flaw in this assumption is demonstrated by Template:Sub and en:Template:Sub which not only have different parameters, they have very different purposes. There may be other such pairs of dissimilar templates: I don't know, I only noticed the problem with {{sub}}. --Redrose64 (talk; at English Wikipedia) 23:07, 10 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
That's fine. Module:String is a generic module which should be kept in sync, but many other templates are Meta-specific and shouldn't be mirrored. The updated version is only slightly different from the older version, so we could update it and I can fix any pages added to Category:Pages with script errors as they appear. —Pathoschild 02:33, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
