Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands.
Amsterdam lies in the province of North Holland, at the river IJ and the mouth of the river Amstel. The North Sea Canal connects the city to the North Sea. Approximately 739,000 people live in the city itself; some 1.5 million live in the city's region. As the capital of The Netherlands, this is where royal inaugurations and weddings are held.
