Mini edit-a-thon Process/Process

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Mini edit-a-thon has its own process. The following aspects are to be taken into account:

Occasion, timing -

The idea of the edit-a-thons focused on important themes which might have been adopted on Indic or global projects. The major occasions like Independence Day, Diwali & other festivals, New Year, Science day, Women’s History Month, International Film Festival of India (IFFI), World Yoga Day, World Health Day, Earth Hour, World Science Day for Peace and Development etc. could be chosen to attract the attention of the communities. The context may be Indian or International. Current affairs like the COVID pandemic, Farmers’ Movement, Olympics or any World Cup matches can also be appealing. It should be checked whether the event is clashing with any important movement events or community events. We should avoid the week before and after those events. The weekends would be fixed preferably.

Theme

As already mentioned above, the occasion will decide the theme. Based on the theme, the ‘list of articles every language WP must have’ could be developed with community participation. The respective categories will be focused on article creation. The content gaps will be identified.

Rules & Guidelines -

The rules regarding article size, article theme/topics, principles to be adhered to, location of participants, submission start and end timings, the registration and submission process, the authority of juries etc. should be finalised.

Scope of Wikimedia projects - We will mainly try to engage communities for content creation on Wikipedia only. But scope will be fixed according to the theme of the Mini edit-a-thon.
Metrics -

For the last few years, we are trying to increase the content quantity and content quality on Indic Wikipedia or Wikimedia projects. For further quality content creation, we will approach community leaders or contact persons or veteran Wikimedians to take a lead for the series of Mini edit-a-thon. If they are convinced, they will reach out to their community members and also track the contribution of editors during the event. Problems will be discussed to overcome barriers in Community engagement.

Incentives if any -

For the upcoming series of Mini edit-a-thons, we will appreciate consistent quality contributions at the end of the series. Recognition is an important thing for every Wikimedian and we will try to write a blog, social media post or text on Meta about significant contributions.

Event page publishing:

For each Mini edit-a-thon, we will create an event page two weeks in advance. The details about registration, theme, topics, rules and submission will be clearly specified on this page.

Announcements calendar -

The tentative schedule of Mini edit-a-thons in this program year will be prepared and marked on the CIS calendar. The occasions and themes will be decided. One month before the scheduled event, a notification will be sent on the A2K mailing list for getting more suggestions or ideas. The plan will be discussed in the A2K monthly meeting in the previous month. The announcement on the India list and VPs will be posted 10 (ten) days before the event. The communities will be notified through posts on social media groups simultaneously.

Promotion -

For more involvement or engagement, the promotion of the event is the most important aspect. After the 60 per cent completion of the event page, we will announce on the India mailing list and VPs at least 10 days before the event.

On this time, social media channels are engaging or informing individuals or groups, so, we will start posting on social media CIS-A2K pages.

We will also write a Mini edit-a-thon diff blog post on the upcoming series of Mini edit-a-thons. We also can drop MassMessage on the participant’s page who participated in the last series. We may mention a few editors in the blog to encourage them. We will write about the edit-a-thon’s statistics, learnings and will inform readers about the next plan.

Monitoring & Evaluation, Reporting - As we already mentioned, we will try to engage leaders, contact persons or responsible ones to help us for tracking the contributions for quality issues. We will prepare the statistics with the support of key contact persons and active community members.

We will report the outcomes on the meta event page. We will publish a diff blog post for the wider movement.
