MassMessage bot "user page"

Hello :) I just noticed that the new "global user page" for the bot looks kinda... useless (see example here). Does anybody know how to tweak it? Thank you. --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 20:58, 30 March 2015 (UTC)

A translation admin should check this, this is not a real solution, it's only a quick hack to see what happens:

1. I've removed a rather obscure "double-includeonly" in the first line, because it had no obvious (for me) purpose.
2. I've enclosed everything else in "noinclude", after that step the page was empty on other projects.
3. I've added the same English text without translate-tags as "includeonly" below the translated noinclude (2). After that the English text was shown on your example link.

I think we should directly show the translations on each wiki's language. I attempted to make it work some days ago but didn't have time to look at it further so left it as it was. Maybe I'll take a look at it later to make it work. Glaisher (talk) 11:02, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

If I'm a user elsewhere, and look at this page elsewhere, I'd always see the English version, is that correct? Otherwise Pathoschild would have to update the documentation. –Be..anyone (talk) 21:42, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

@Be..anyone You'll see the version in your interface language (compare sv and ja text). This works because the translations are in translated Meta templates, and the interface language is taken into account when rendering the global user page. (That's why {{int:}} works on global user pages but {{CONTENTLANG}} doesn't.) —Pathoschild 22:55, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

Better example, sv worked immediately, ja reported an error, and after a purge I got an sv header with ja text on ja. I fear I can't test global preferences and translated global user pages at the same time for any remotely reproducable results. –Be..anyone (talk) 23:02, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

No, it won't work. It depends on the content language of the wiki. Since Meta's content language is English, it will only work for the English category name here. Likewise at French Wikipedia the Italian category name won't work. But it will work even if the category "page" hasn't been created. Glaisher (talk) 11:47, 1 May 2015 (UTC)

Well, just because of an issue in that userpage, I don't think we should disable localization but if you think that it should be disabled please file a task. --Glaisher (talk) 12:02, 1 May 2015 (UTC)

I'm not suggesting we shouldn't translate that page, just that the name of the category should stay in English so that it works for everyone. The suggestion to add the user page to an otherwise not working category doesn't make sense to me :) --Elitre (WMF) (talk) 12:17, 1 May 2015 (UTC)

With Citoid in VisualEditor, you click the 'book with bookmark' icon and paste in the URL for a reliable source:

Citoid looks up the source for you and returns the citation results. Click the green "Insert" button to accept its results and add them to the article:

After inserting the citation, you can change it. Select the reference, and click the "Edit" button in the context menu to make changes.

The user guide has more information about how to use VisualEditor.

Since the last newsletter, the Editing Team has fixed many bugs and worked on VisualEditor's performance, the Citoid reference service, and support for languages with complex input requirements. Status reports are posted on Mediawiki.org. The worklist for April through June is available in Phabricator.

The weekly task triage meetings continue to be open to volunteers, each Wednesday at 11:00 (noon) PDT (18:00 UTC). You do not need to attend the meeting to nominate a bug for consideration as a Q4 blocker. Instead, go to Phabricator and "associate" the Editing team's Q4 blocker project with the bug. Recent improvements

VisualEditor is now substantially faster. In many cases, opening the page in VisualEditor is now faster than opening it in the wikitext editor. The new system has improved the code speed by 37% and network speed by almost 40%.

The Editing team is slowly adding auto-fill features for citations. This is currently available only at the French, Italian, and English Wikipedias. The Citoid service takes a URL or DOI for a reliable source, and returns a pre-filled, pre-formatted bibliographic citation. After creating it, you will be able to change or add information to the citation, in the same way that you edit any other pre-existing citation in VisualEditor. Support for ISBNs, PMIDs, and other identifiers is planned. Later, editors will be able to improve precision and reduce the need for manual corrections by contributing to the Citoid service's definitions for each website.

Citoid requires good TemplateData for your citation templates. If you would like to request this feature for your wiki, please post a request in the Citoid project on Phabricator. Include links to the TemplateData for the most important citation templates on your wiki.

The special character inserter has been improved, based upon feedback from active users. After this, VisualEditor was made available to all users of Wikipedias on the Phase 5 list on 30 March. This affected 53 mid-size and smaller Wikipedias, including Afrikaans, Azerbaijani, Breton, Kyrgyz, Macedonian, Mongolian, Tatar, and Welsh.

Work continues to support languages with complex requirements, such as Korean and Japanese. These languages use input method editors ("IMEs”). Recent improvements to cursoring, backspace, and delete behavior will simplify typing in VisualEditor for these users.

The design for the image selection process is now using a "masonry fit" model. Images in the search results are displayed at the same height but at variable widths, similar to bricks of different sizes in a masonry wall, or the "packed" mode in image galleries. This style helps you find the right image by making it easier to see more details in images.

You can now drag and drop categories to re-arrange their order of appearance ​on the page.

The pop-up window that appears when you click on a reference, image, link, or other element, is called the "context menu". It now displays additional useful information, such as the destination of the link or the image's filename. The team has also added an explicit "Edit" button in the context menu, which helps new editors open the tool to change the item.

Invisible templates are marked by a puzzle piece icon so they can be interacted with. Users also will be able to see and edit HTML anchors now in section headings.

Users of the TemplateData GUI editor can now set a string as an optional text for the 'deprecated' property in addition to boolean value, which lets you tell users of the template what they should do instead. (T90734)

Looking ahead

The special character inserter in VisualEditor will soon use the same special character list as the wikitext editor. Admins at each wiki will also have the option of creating a custom section for frequently used characters at the top of the list. Instructions for customizing the list will be posted at mediawiki.org.

The team is discussing a test of VisualEditor with new users at the English Wikipedia, to see whether they have met their goals of making VisualEditor suitable for those editors. The timing is unknown, but might be relatively soon. (T90666)

Apparently <h3>Let's work together</h3> instead of === Let's work together === gets rid of the bogus "edit links" within a newsletter, keeping the anchor + ToC entry as is. How can that be arranged globally for all newsletters posted on Village Pumps or similar pages? –Be..anyone (talk) 22:17, 10 April 2015 (UTC)

Sometimes people add feedback right below the newsletter, and I know for sure I use the section links to edit that bit when I reply (as I would have done in this case if those were still real sections), but it's not a huge loss for me. A new protection level for "editors"?

There seems to be a new user right "Edit pages protected as "Allow only editors" (editeditorprotected)". Where can I find more information about this? Is it a global right or is it for a special wiki? What does the user group "editor" mean specifically? Is it a Flagged Revisions group "editors" who have the right "review"? --Pxos (talk) 12:05, 2 May 2015 (UTC)

Thanks! So it seems to be only for German Wikipedia (only members of the Flagged Revisions user group "Editors" (Sichter) can edit). When this has been implemented in the main code, other projects that are using Flagged Revisions and thus have a user group similar to "Editors" may apply for this protection if necessary. Hi Ori Livneh. Thanks for the note and for your help in mantaining CentralNotice! I see that you have already the rights but no log action on Special:Log/rights is stored. I guess you granted the rights yourself directly on the server. If it is not much asking, in light of Meta:Meta–steward_relationship#Logging_of_actions policy, we would like that further rights grantings and removals are logged. We have of course no issues with developers working here and setting rights as they need, but we would like that the process be transparent, otherwise it is hard to track right changes. If you could create a log entry for your rights addition it could be great, the same when you remove your rights. I see that you posess no specific local nor global rights that allows you to use Special:UserRights, maybe Jalexander-WMF could ask to add you in the sysadmin group so you could have access to that interface? Instructions for creating test wiki?

At Requests for new languages/Wikipedia French Simple 3 I was informed that I needed to create a test wiki for this project. However... I never received instructions for opening it. I can create a test wiki once I know how to do this. WhisperToMe (talk) 08:10, 28 April 2015 (UTC)
