We, the undersigned, hereby announce the establishment of the Wikimedia Latin American and Caribbean Hub, referred to as the LAC Hub. This initiative aims to foster a collaborative network among volunteers, affiliates, and Wikimedia communities throughout the Latin American and Caribbean region, thereby advancing the mission and vision of the Wikimedia movement.

Mission and Vision

Our mission is to empower people in the LAC region to share knowledge. We are committed to promoting free and equitable access to information, irrespective of language, culture, geography, or time zone. Our objective is to establish and sustain a network of individuals and communities engaged in Wikimedia projects and other free knowledge resources to realize this vision.

Our vision aims to cultivate a Latin America and Caribbean region where all individuals have the opportunity to access and contribute to knowledge. We firmly believe that knowledge has the power to transform lives and communities. We are committed to promoting a culture of participation that encourages knowledge sharing and to developing inclusive and reliable resources.

To achieve our mission and vision, we prioritize cooperation and strategic partnerships. Collaborating with like-minded organizations enables us to enhance our impact. We are dedicated to establishing meaningful relationships with civic associations, educational institutions, and non-profit organizations.

We prioritize diversity and honor the distinct experiences of each individual. We recognize that this is vital to our success and are dedicated to cultivating a harmonious, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all, irrespective of their background, identity, or beliefs.

We advocate for equitable treatment and access to opportunities, acknowledging the strengths and challenges of all stakeholders involved.

We prioritize the promotion of free information and the enhancement of access to knowledge. We are confident that collaboration can create a positive and enduring impact both locally and globally, and we are dedicated to fostering a shared future by leveraging the power of erudition.

Fundamental values

  • Harmony: We are dedicated to fostering understanding, support, and collaboration among volunteers, affiliates, and the hub.
  • Erudition: Our objective is to ensure that our actions are grounded in logical and strategic intent. By leveraging our collective expertise, we aim to make a positive impact on the individuals and communities we serve, enhancing the effectiveness, efficiency, and sustainability of our initiatives. We will monitor and communicate our outcomes and measures to encourage a culture of learning within the region.
  • Integrity: We are committed to conducting our activities with honesty and integrity, maintaining truthfulness, trustworthiness, and accountability.
  • Transparency: We uphold the principles of openness and accountability in our decision-making processes, ensuring that we provide relevant information about our work and engage in transparent interactions with our stakeholders.
  • Trailblazing: We will strive to cultivate strong, positive relationships among all individuals who align with the hub's mission and vision.

These core values serve as the foundation for our work and decision-making processes. We are dedicated to upholding these principles and encouraging others to join us in our mission of making knowledge accessible to everyone. Additionally, we will provide channels for addressing any deviations from these values, thereby promoting a harmonious working environment.

Strategic direction

The objective of our Hub is to enhance the free knowledge infrastructure in the LAC region, develop capacity, support our affiliates and communities, improve collaboration, and promote equitable access to knowledge.

We focus on the strategic direction of the Wikimedia movement within the region, emphasizing collaboration and partnerships to accomplish our goals. We are committed to building enduring relationships with the regional community and its stakeholders, recognizing that decision-makers may not always reflect the varied perspectives of the community.

We are dedicated to collaborating with a diverse array of partners, including non-governmental organizations, cultural institutions, the academic community, and other like-minded organizations, to achieve these objectives. Together, we believe we can create a significant impact and establish a knowledge ecosystem that is more open and accessible to everyone.

We are dedicated to upholding the core principles of the Wikimedia movement, including openness, objectivity, and equitable access to knowledge. We prioritize transparent and honest communication in order to foster trust among our community and stakeholders. We acknowledge the existing content gaps within our free knowledge ecosystem and are committed to continuously adapting and reassessing our assumptions to ensure our ongoing relevance.

Our Hub is dedicated to advancing the Wikimedia movement's strategy within the region and fostering sustainable partnerships that enhance the free knowledge infrastructure. We are committed to the belief that collaboration on our shared principles fosters a more inclusive, equitable, secure, and accessible knowledge environment for everyone.

Signatories

We warmly welcome all members of the Wikimedia community in Latin America and the Caribbean to join our Hub for collaboration and cooperation in this exciting new initiative. Together, we have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact.
