Karavali Wikimedians/Events/Pursereg Kattuna Documentary Releasing

The Karavali Wikimedians User Group, with the support of the Wikimedia Foundation, is in the process of producing a documentary titled Pursa Kattuna. This documentary is scheduled to be released during a program to be held at Vani College in Belthangady on 02 October 2023.

Pursakkattuna is a ritualistic dance form performed by the people of different castes in various parts of Belthangady taluk in Dakshina Kannada district. It is usually observed at the end of all agricultural activities. This ritualistic dance form is predominantly performed by men, and is customarily performed for three to five nights around the full moon day of the Suggi month. The ritual is led by the Gowda community and is performed in harmony with the participation of people from different castes. Usually, it will have dozens of diverse costumes. Some scholars argue that Purushakattuna came into existence under the influence of the secret tantric sects of medieval Karnataka.

We are delighted to announce the successful release and screening of the "Pursa Kattuna" documentary in Belthangady. The event was graced by the presence of the former Vice Chancellor of Folklore University, Shiggavi, who not only released the documentary but also delivered an insightful speech on this groundbreaking research-oriented project and its significance in preserving Tulu culture and living heritage.

In his address, he elucidated the concept and theory behind the "Pursa Kattuna" documentary, emphasizing the pivotal role of modern technology in documenting and archiving our living heritage. His words underscored the importance of leveraging contemporary tools to safeguard and perpetuate our cultural traditions.

Furthermore, Dr. Taltaje Vasanth Kumar added to the discourse by shedding light on the Natha Pantha and Baudda Pantha aspects integrated within the Siddavesha and "Pursa Kattuna." His expertise and insights contributed significantly to our understanding of this rich cultural tapestry.
