Why a Latin Wikipedia? The Wiki environment has helped many small language communities to find expression on the Internet. This is great for language diversity, and it is great for a specialized language such as Latin, which is still today an international language for scientific terminology and an official language of the Catholic church. Vicipaedia needs to be a resource for everyone in the multilingual Wiki world. Vicipaedians face challenges! For example: In its 2000 year history Latin has different forms and an almost infinite lexicon. There is no Latin dictionary or encyclopedia that covers the whole range. Vicipaedians have learned their Latin from school, from the church, from scientific usage. Is a standard language still possible? Sources are multilingual -- and Latinists are multilingual -- but how do Wikipedia policies of reliability apply to sources in Latin (ancient, medieval, religious, scientific)? Latin names from Vicipaedia are widely copied, all over the Web. How do we find and verify Latin names for people and places, Latin terms for modern ideas?

Perché una Wikipedia in latino? L'ambiente Wiki ha aiutato molte piccole comunità linguistiche a potersi esprimere su Internet. Ciò è importante per la ricchezza linguistica, ed è importante per una lingua specialistica come il latino che ancora oggi è un linguaggio internazionale per la terminologia scientifica e una lingua ufficiale per la Chiesa cattolica. Vicipaedia deve essere una risorsa per chiunque nel mondo multilinguistico di Wiki. Essere vicipaediano significa affrontare alcune sfide! Ad esempio: Nei sui 2000 anni di storia il latino ha avuto varie forme e un lessico pressoché infinito. Nessun dizionario di latino o enciclopedia copre l'intero spettro. Ciascun Vicipaediano ha imparato il proprio latino a scuola, in chiesa, o in ambito scientifico. Un linguaggio standard è comunque possible? Le fonti sono in varie lingue -- e i latinisti sono di madrelingua diversa -- ma come si applicano le regole di verificabilità alle fonti in latino (antico, medievale, religioso, scientifico)? I nomi latini ripresi da Vicipaedia vengono ampiamenti diffusi sul tutto il web. Come possiamo trovare e verificare i nomi latini di luoghi e popoli, e i lemmi latini per le i concetti moderni?
