World Book and Copyright Day is a celebration to promote and encourage the enjoyment of books and reading. It is celebrated annually all over the world, on 23 April. This year's celebration of "Indigenous Languages" is a call to recognize the importance of preserving and promoting the use of native languages in literature and storytelling. After the World Book Day 2023 event, the impact was significant with new members joining and engaging in book translation for the first time. Participants actively read the synopses of books on various genres and translated them into the Igbo language, contributing to the preservation and revitalization of the language. The event resulted in the creation of more than 160 new articles and the editing of 280 articles, and a total of 477 edits. Improving The Igbo Wiktionary,12/05/2023

[edit]

The Wiktionary as one of the tools in preserving the Igbo language. This became my concern as many definitions on the Igbo Wiktionary do not define or describe the words, and many were not properly created, some lacking photos and pronunciation audio. It was as a result of these that community members were called on to help improve the Igbo Wiktionary, promoting the Digitization of the Igbo language. The event was held on 12th May 2023 at Dunhill Restaurant Okpuno Awka Anambra State where 33 participants joined the event and contributed to the Igbo Wiktionary. The event took one week for it's completion and 651 total edits were achieved ,97 new words were created especially the Igbo numerals. The event was impactful as it thought many Editors and new participants how to create new words, how to improve by adding audio, photos and word examples, corrections were made on the already existing words, giving them good Igbo definitions and description. The Event Dashboard will give clear view of the Contributions made.

[edit]

The event which held at National Energy Research Center, University of Nigeria, Nsukka focused on training participants on the fundamentals of editing both on Wikipedia and Wikidata and creating wiki data entries for female professors in Nigeria to celebrate the International Women’s Day [IWD] 2023. The program was targeted at bridging the gender gap in Wikimedia as well as addressing the geographical underrepresentation of Nigeria and indeed Africa in Wikimedia projects. Participants created wikidata for female professors in Nigeria as part of our celebration of International Women’s Day, 2023. Because we got some new editors, we took the participants through the basic knowledge about Wikimedia Foundation and Wikimedia Projects.

Even though some of the participants has been contributing to Wikimedia projects, this was the first time the participants were introduced to Wikidata. The event had 18 editors and 23 participants in attendance. There were participants who could not edit because they had no android or smart phone and no laptop. We created 21 items, edited 31 items, had 319 edits, 43 references, 26 common upload and 923 views. Creating Wikidata for female Professors was very exciting for the participants as they learnt that such action could help to reduce the gender and geographic gap in Wikimedia. INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY 2023

[edit]

International Literacy Day (ILD) is an annual observance held on September 8th with the aim of advancing literacy worldwide. This year's theme, "Promoting literacy for a world in transition: Building the foundation for sustainable and peaceful societies," encourages collaborative efforts to accelerate progress towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4) on education and lifelong learning. It also invites reflection on the pivotal role of literacy in constructing more inclusive, peaceful, just, and sustainable societies. This underscores the interdependent relationship between literacy and broader aspects of development: Literacy is at the core of nurturing such societies, and advancements in other developmental areas stimulate people's interest and motivation to acquire, apply, and enhance their literacy and numeracy skills. Igbo Wikimedians User Group successfully marked the International Literacy Day 2023 in Akwa, Anambra State with over 40 Wikimedians in attendance. A Lecture was delivered by the facilitator Kingsley Nkem who is a lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University and also an experienced Wikimedian.
