I was PERFECTLY fine using separate log-in accounts!
Like I said, I would rather have it to where I can log in separately at each and every wiki with which I have become a member. Others who are not so self-conscious about their screennames are undoubtedly THRILLED with this new system. But for those of us who have worked at several wikis EACH WITH A DIFFERENT USERNAME, it is frustrating to say the very least. So, if there's some way to turn the global account feature OFF I would love to know how to do that. Think of the people who know me at other wikis under my respective names. They'd flip if I told them I was so-and-so but am now going under a universal name. Huh-uh! I want my SEPARATE accounts back!!!!—Strabismus 04:10, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
PS—Please respond to my query on my English wikipedia account. Thanks!—Strabismus 04:17, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

problem with "no" account
On no.wikipedia, the account no:Bruker:Bjs was usurped for me. I can login with my SUL password, can edit pages and so on, but in my account overview, "no" has the status "unattached". I could not integrate it with the procedure provided in the German language wikipedia to merge accounts. Is there any other tool to do so? Greetings --Bjs 18:42, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
- Hello, there is no problem with that account, it is just the toolservers. There are just these unattached ones:
* en.wikipedia.org * nl.wikipedia.org
- the one on no.wiki was attached on 4. janúar 2009 kl. 14:32, (retrieved from special:centralauth)
- Please don't worry about the tools, they will not work correctly for some time, just rely on special:mergeaccount.

New conflicts
Hi, I don't understand how this all works. I have SUL on this name since late last year, but already four new name conflicts have been created this year. Can I not stop these, except by going to every single wiki in advance to create a presence everywhere? Mysha
- Hello,
- Unattached accounts
- en.wikiversity.org
- fr.wikipedia.org
- lt.wikipedia.org
- www.mediawiki.org
- Looking into the contributions and logs of these, they did exist already before late last year, so there are no new conflicts and can't be because Your name is protected now everywhere You don't have yet an account.

Emails from wiki-welcome bots after SUL enabled
I think it may be worth mentioning somewhere on the page that you may receive a ton of automated emails from Wiki-Welcome bots when you enable SUL and you edit a language wiki that has these turned on - the usual 'Some-Random-Welcome-Bot has left a note on your talkpage' or 'Welcome to the Thai Wikipedia (in gibberish)'. There have been a few threads on en.wiki's helpdesk since SUL was turned on asking what the hell was happening. Nanonic 01:38, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
- E.g. w:en:Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2008 October 12#email received. Nanonic 02:44, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
- I really doubt people get "a ton" of automated emails, what happens is when people visit a new wiki is that a local account is created and then the smaller projects have enotifiy, which is enabled per default. I can tell that I am on many projects and glad about that feature, and I am not spammed. I recommend to either not to visit tons of wikis (we only have 700something) in one day or to vote for the bug 14950 because if that would be fixed one could proably disable enotify in the global preferences.
- Also note, that people who create completely new accounts now have sul-accounts per default (except that name is already registered somewhere else and not yet suled), so they can not "choose" if they want sul or not anyway.
- Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 02:54, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

en.labs.wikimedia.org
There may be a problem with SUL on http://en.labs.wikimedia.org, as it appears to be impossible to create an account there using my existing username, and it won't automatically create one. I've created an account there (http://toolserver.org/~vvv/sulutil.php?user=Amberswood) but when I went to en.wikipedia with the account, although the account was automatically created there it didn't merge or set a password, and I had to request a password via e-mail. It looks like other users have had accounts created automatically there, so is there a way of creating an account with my usual username there? Snigbrook 01:43, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

- Thanks for the advice, it worked, the problem was because it wasn't created in the same way as on other wikis I had only tried using the "create account" page. Snigbrook 12:36, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
- Glad it worked, here is a bit of an explaination: There are some wikis that aren't included in the automatic login system, (e.g. incubator, local chapter wikis, wikimania2009, labs wikis, etc.) one has to manually log in there, account creation does not work, because the name is protected due to sul. can userpages be kept separate
Does unifying my login mean that I won't be able to keep separate user pages? That was useful so far to keep track of which pages I worked on in the different sister projects. I gather from the help text that email and user name will then be uniform. Creating a unified account will create the missing user pages in the so far unused sister projects or just create a pointer to a central user page? Thanks. Jasu 15:40, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
- Don't worry, the user pages all stay completely seperate as do all the preferences as well. The only thing that changes is you have a single login for all the sites. ZX81 talk 15:58, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
- Great, that's what I hoped for. Thanks for getting back to me on that. Jasu
Questions regarding similarity check
Unified accounts is a great step forward. I'm still unclear though on the similarity check of login names the mediawiki performs to prevent impersonation. I was able to create a user with just one letter in small caps which went unnoticed by this check a while ago - "First lastname" in addition to "First Lastname". In a recent test, I couldn't repeat it. It appears that this has been fixed but I couldn't find any explanation about the similarity check or recommendations which name permutations one should also reserve to prevent impersonation. Would like to find out more. Best,

- OK looking at previous comments I realise the propagation of accounts is not instant. You might SAY SO. This is a perpetual bind with me, people forget that some others may not know or care what "toolserver" is they just want it to work. Fix it. Your problem. Search and fix is so sodding difficult on Wikixxxx it takes far longer than actually adding value, it is very frustrating. 92.40.144.193 15:25, 2 May 2009 (UTC)
- What do You want? What You are writing is incomprensible, so if You are asking for help, please do that in an comprensible way.
- Btw. the toolserver has nothing to do with the functionality of SUL, the toolserver is just an outside service, it is completely irrelevant to the functionality of a global account.

Removal of UL
What does one do if they have UL but don't want it anymore? How is it removed? Can it be? What's the process? - ALLST✰R▼echo wuz here @ 01:11, 7 June 2009 (UTC)
- Hello, we usually do not delete global accounts, all new accounts are global per default. We only delete them for technical reasons (e.g. an empty global account with no attached ones after an rename action; and similar technical problems..), because we will not destroy the work of the devs now and revert their achievement again. So if one does not have a very good reason for this (if it is just "I don't like it"), this will not be done.
- One can ask in SR/SUL and explain the exact problem, usually we find a solution for everyone. Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 06:36, 7 June 2009 (UTC)
- How is Unified Login global by default when I had to go through a process to get Unified Login in the first place? One would think that since there's a process to get Unified Login, there would be a process to undo it if a user decides they don't want Unified Login anymore. - ALLST✰R▼echo wuz here @ 16:00, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
- As I said, "all new accounts are global per default". They can not chose anything. People with old accounts have the option to make their accounts global, but they do not have the option to revert it. That is it. There is not always an option to revert ones actions in other aspects of life either. Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 19:57, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
Removal of Italian Account
For reasons I can't begin to understand, I seem to have an account on it.wikipedia.org as part of my unified login. While it's certainly not harming anybody that it's there, it's also misleading (not to mention puzzling), since I don't speak a word of Italian. To my knowledge, I've never looked at an Italian article, and my user contributions (once I figured out where they were) confirm that I certainly haven't edited anything there. Is it possible to have just one site's login permanently removed from my UL? Given the UL, I wasn't sure if it was even possible to remove that account, much less how to go about doing so when I can't understand what I'm looking at, so I thought I'd ask here first. Thanks! --RobinHood70 17:45, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
- No it is not possible, please live with it that Your account might have several local account where You never edit, this is certainly not missleading, the contributions show where You are active and which wiki You are from, best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 17:59, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

Divorcing an account
Hello - I had my en-wiki account renamed to "Steve Smith", which seems to have automatically left behind a new account with my former name of "Sarcasticidealist" (which is still the name I use at all other projects, mostly because I'm too lazy to request renames at all of them). I understand that it's not possible to attach my "Steve Smith" en-wiki account to my Sarcasticidealist SUL, but is it possible to divorce my "Sarcasticidealist" en-wiki account from the SUL? Right now whenever I log into, for example, the Commons as "Sarcasticidealist", it also logs me into all other projects as "Sarcasticidealist", which has the effect of logging me out of en-wiki as "Steve Smith". Any advice? Sarcasticidealist 20:22, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
- Hello, yes it is possible "to divorce Your "Sarcasticidealist" en-wiki account from the SUL", sorry for the late reply, I did miss this question. For requesting this please go to SR/SUL. Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 05:25, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
Still need to log in projects where an account was registered before
Hello,
I wonder if it is normal that I still need to separately log in projects where an account was registered before?
For example if I log in meta, I can visit most wikis correctly (de, jp, …), except those where I had registered an account before I created my meta account. For example in fr:wikipedia, en:wikipedia or fr:wikibooks. When I log in one of those and check the preferences, it says my account is correctly attached.
So for the moment I have a SUA (single unified Account). How can I do to really get a SUL?

Someone is using my name on another wiki, how can I get that account?
The information on this subject kind of leaves me at a loss on how to actually accomplish the resolution of my username conflicts. In particular: How do I find out
- whether there are bureaucrats on arwiki, cswiki, fawiki, frwiki, idwiki, metawiki, mswiki?
- how I can/should contact these bureaucrats or, on default, the appropricate stewards?
--88.130.212.243 21:54, 23 August 2009 (UTC) mhi
- Hello, all those wikis have local bureaucrats, please ask for renames there (interwikilinks to the requestpages can be found on SR/SUL, or type
special:listusers/bureaucrat
into the searchfield on the local wiki), thanks. Stewards only do the renaming if the local wikis have no bureaucrats. Please note that usurping might not be possible on some projects if the accounts have edits, which seems to be the case on cswiki. To get a working sul-account, I would recommend to get a new name, which is not yet taken or try to ask the user on cswiki kindly if he would allow You to take his name and be renamed to something else, best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 05:38, 24 August 2009 (UTC)- Thanks a million! --92.116.75.42 06:57, 24 August 2009 (UTC) mhi

- What do you mean? Do you want to Usurp an account with your name you don't control or do you just want to use an account you make on each wiki. Jamesofur 06:42, 5 September 2009 (UTC)
- I just want to use an account I made on one wiki on all wikis if that is possible. 98.125.210.161 21:20, 5 September 2009 (UTC)
- Generally that's exactly what the Unified login does, in most cases there ISN'T another account with your username and so what happens is you reserve the right to that name on all Wikimedia projects. Then when ever you visit that project for the first time you will either automatically get logged in (usually) or you can log in with your normal username/password and it will automatically create an account for you there. Technically you are editing from a separate account from each wiki but it will always be your own account name (and can be searched to show crosswiki edit counts/activity etc. from looking here: http://toolserver.org/~vvv/sulutil.php?user=NeoJustin I only see a NeoJustin account on meta and en.wiki no where else. - I just want to use an account I made on one wiki on all wikis if that is possible. 98.125.210.161 21:20, 5 September 2009 (UTC)
Clumsy Grammar Overcompensation
Because incompetent public school teachers tell their victims that adverbs must ALWAYS end in -ly, and that any descriptor following a verb is an adverb, people end up wandering through life amusing actual linguists by saying silly things like "I feel badly", or "Firstly, note that the existence of the other account".
The -ly on firstly is redundant. It's as bad as people who stop using apostrophes at all, because they realize they were using them incorrectly. "First" is already a legitimate adverb; they do not always end in -ly, nor should they.[1]
I am, of course, referring to the first line of Someone is using my name on another wiki, how can I get that account? in the article. It needs to be changed to, simply, "First, note that..." Kazvorpal 12:42, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
Trying to change Unified Login
Changing from Mjquin_id to Mjquinn_id on all wikis; but I cannot find a procedure on several? Changed on enwiki and Wiktionary; but here (Wikimedia), Commons?, Wikibooks? Any help is appreciated. Mjquin id 04:22, 7 October 2009 (UTC)
- Hello, unfortunately renames can't be done globally, You will have to ask on each wiki, if the wiki has no local bureaucrats, You can ask at Steward requests/SUL requests, or Steward requests/Username changes, I recommend to ask only for renames on wikis where You have edits to limit the number of required renames (check it with the sul-tool). On SR/SUL You can find links to local wiki requestpages on the left hand side at the interwikilinks and also here. Metas requestpage is here and the Commons one there. To make the new name a global account, or to add renamed accounts to the global one just go to special:MergeAccount while logged in. "HomeWiki ???" - Display
Hello, I made most of my edits in de:wiki and a few ones in commons. Now if I display my Global- / UL-account there is always that disturbing "homewiki ???" although it should read "homewiki de". Is there any possibility to get that corrected ? Where to apply ?? If possible answer in my de:discussion page or here - THANK YOU --PhChAK 01:36, 15 November 2009 (UTC)
- Hello, I guess You are talking about the sultool [2], this is an outside service (on the toolserver), which is why we can't influence it, maybe talk to User:VasilievVV, who made that tool. Note that on special:mergeaccount everything should be fine and that is the only real special page for users for the global account. Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 10:03, 15 November 2009 (UTC)
- Hello Spacebirdy, yes I was wondering about that entry. I thought the error would be in the data, not the display tool. Why - by the way - is the special:mergeaccount-page NOT displaying the homewiki ? Resp. where can I find the official entry, which wiki really IS my homewiki (or some other persons homewiki) ??
- I would like to have two things: a) a unification of all my watchlists as it is much better to have only one central watchlist (on my homewiki). And b) a redirect from all my discussion pages to my "homewiki-discussion-page". That would save me from patrolling all my watchlists and discussion pages ... --PhChAK (signature added later)
- Hello, please see bugzilla:14950, bugzilla:13953, bugzilla:3525, also there is a tool (right now not working, there might be a problem with the toolservers atm.) for a global watchlist, maybe there exists a bugzilla request for that already too. Right now the homewiki can only be seen properly by the stewards via special:centralauth, but since the "homewiki" does not have any effect yet, this is no problem at all. If that ever will change I guess they will make a better interface for the options for the account to choose, also to change the homewiki, but until then the term "homewiki" is only cosmetic. - Thank you ... waiting a while for "bugfixes" & enhancements ... --PhChAK 15:36, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
Global Notification
Has there been any development on a global message notification feature? I know that on this main page it says that it might be released in the future. 69.177.201.119 23:14, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
