Rewriting this guide

Would someone write a book on the Mediawiki software to make it intelligible?? Brettz9 05:27, 12 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

Yes! You're quite correct. This "handbook" is rediculous. It is disorganized and jammed with superfluous technical discussion and jargon. What is required here is concise and accessible material written in plain English. I would attempt to tackle the problem myself, if I could only understand the information to begin with. :) --Nigedo 18:32, 28 Jun 2005 (UTC)

While I appreciate that mediwiki is an evolving framework, some thought needs to be given to presenting an administrative guide as a finished product rather than as a largely disjointed series of technical discussions. --82.38.248.4 11:48, 2 Jul 2005 (UTC)

My goal is to help the guide become intelligable.. I just don't have tons of time, and I'm focusing on a slightly higher level order first. I want to make it clear what each page is for, and keep single topics to a page. Then, I want to create guides by including the single topic pages in an order that makes sence.
When you learn how to do something... please write down how to do it. If you put it in the wrong place, an editor should be able to place it where it's supposed to go... but... you know where you looked first for it.. and you should put it there... or link to it from there. Help

Could someone PLEASE help clarify the question I've added to section 2.1 of http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Help:Guide_for_system_administrators_for_setting_up_interwiki_linking ?

I don't know where to ask...

this kinda out there but- ya know the error page you get sometimes when the servers lagging (or for whatever reason)? it says "error" in many languages. that could use a tweak/rewrite. I don't think whoever wrote that really wants to use "hopefully" the way s/he did. is there any community input on th content of that page? sorry for posting this question here, I reeeeeally don;t know where to post it. yaaa. yaaaa Schzzly 02:50, 12 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

move everything documentation to help namespace?

I just plain don't like namespaces... at least writing namespaces down in the links. that said, there are lots of help files still in the documentation namesapce. Should we move those to the help namespace? I'll eventually do it if nobody says anything... I some guy named elloquence (sp) started poking arround moving stuff a while ago and it ticked me off.. but he did seem to know what he was doing... and now I'm thinking that that would be as intended. (gosh I'm getting wordy.. time for bed) AaronPeterson 07:22, 5 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Admin-to-the-Rescue Procedure?

I searched and searched in the MediaWiki documentation -- but I wasn't able to find the answer to a very very important question.

It happens from time to time that a user forgets his or her password - and also somehow gets things set up so that their user-account's E-mail doesn't point in the right direction.

In situations like this, it is generally considered the duty of the Administrator/Sysop to come to the rescue. However, nowhere in the MediaWiki documentation was I able to find the procedure by which to come to the rescue in such a situation.

What do I do in the event that such a situation arises in a MediaWiki installation that I administer? (I ask this here since I don't know where to ask.)

Comprehensive List of Help Articles

Does this exists? I'm aware that you need to manually export the help files you want and then update the links appropriately, but has anyone documented an attempt at this? Please help.

Problem with installing

I'm having problems generating the configuration file after all the MySQL goes through... it hangs and doesn't produce an error message of any sort. Apparently, the tables are set up... but MediaWiki is not. I'm using 1.8.2 and my e-mail is iyeru42@gmail.com — The preceding unsigned comment was added by 128.104.50.65 (talk) 15:21, 29 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Admin help

Hey, I'm the admin on the Anglo-Saxon wiki, and we're looking to edit the user interface so that the user can select to see ƿ/ȝ in place of w/ġ in his own user interface. This would be the easiest solution to our wiki's font preferences amongst the number of users we have. Would anyone be able to help me in this? --JJohnson1701 23:27, 3 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
