Gungbe Wikimedians User Group/Annual Report 2024

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

The Gungbe Wikimedians User Group is dedicated to promoting the Gungbe language and culture through Wikimedia projects. Over the past year, the group has actively contributed to the growth of Gungbe Wikipedia, Gungbe Wikiquote, Gungbe Wiktionary, Gungbe Wikinews and other Wikimedia initiatives by organizing contests, participating in global discussions, and fostering community engagement. Below is a detailed report of our activities from 16 January 2024 to 15 January 2025.

Major Highlights

[edit]
  • Wikimedia Summit 2024 : The Wikimedia Summit is a key annual event that brings together Wikimedia affiliates, the Wikimedia Foundation, and movement strategy representatives to discuss the future of the Wikimedia ecosystem. This year, User:Jamex18 was selected to represent the Gungbe Wikimedians User Group at the summit. The selection process was competitive, requiring a demonstration of the group’s contributions and alignment with Wikimedia’s global objectives. Unfortunately, due to visa-related challenges, User:Jamex18 was unable to attend the event in person. Despite this setback, the group remained engaged in the discussions through online participation. The insights gained from the summit discussions will help shape the group’s strategic direction and future activities. The user group remains committed to overcoming such logistical barriers to ensure active participation in future Wikimedia events.
  • Feminism and Folklore 2024 (1 February – 31 March 2024) : The Gungbe Wikimedians User Group successfully organized the Feminism and Folklore 2024 campaign on the Gungbe Wikipedia. This initiative was part of the global Feminism and Folklore 2024 writing competition, aimed at documenting folk cultures and women in folklore across different Wikimedia platforms.
Objectives of the Campaign
    • To enrich the Gungbe Wikipedia with high-quality content on folk traditions and women’s roles in folklore.
    • To encourage new and experienced editors to contribute articles in Gungbe.
    • To align with Wikimedia’s broader goal of promoting diversity and representation in free knowledge.
Implementation and Achievements

The campaign ran for two months, during which participants created and improved articles on traditional Gungbe folklore, folk heroes, and stories about women in oral traditions. The user group provided training sessions and resources to help contributors develop well-researched articles.

Key outcomes of the campaign
    • Increased awareness of folklore and feminism topics in the Gungbe Wikimedia community.
    • Improved participation and engagement among Gungbe Wikipedia editors.
    • Strengthened the presence of underrepresented narratives on Wikipedia.

The campaign's success reflects the growing momentum of Gungbe Wikipedia and the commitment of the user group to enriching Wikimedia projects with culturally relevant content.
