This isn't a standalone wiki. It's just an experiment to see if using a dark background (e.g. black, dark gray) instead of the current white one and make the text a light color on some wikis (such as Wikipedia). Two reasons exist for this change:
- Using a black background will save energy on most computer monitors, as opposed to using a white background. The search engine Blackle has saved users 2.9 MWh (megawatt-hours) of electricity.
- Reading black text on a white screen for long periods of time can cause damage to the eyes. As I type this proposal, my eyes are stinging due to this effect. In contrast, white or colored text on a dark background will not cause as much damage.
Preferably, the test will occur on Earth Day (April 22, 2012), as it's already a day to start thinking about energy efficiency and all that green, so Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects can go green—or black. Ideally, the text could be light gray (#9B9B9B
) or green (#00CC00
), and the background could be black or light gray – or even a gradient.
GreenWiki could also be a forum for other ways for the Wikimedia Foundation to become more environmentally friendly.

[edit]We don't even need to put it on a standalone site. The entire project could take place here on Meta-Wiki. Just put discussions under the namespace GreenWiki for project pages.
