About your submission

[edit]

Thank you for this submission, shchung. For now, the committee will wait to make a decision until OpenSym 2014 presentations are scheduled. In the meantime, we are interested in learning more about your past involvement with Wikimedia projects, and how you plan to contribute in the future due to this experience. Looking forward to hearing from you. Cheers, Jtud (WMF) (talk) 18:03, 5 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Dear Jtud (WMF),
First of all I would like to thank you for reviewing my application. My previous involvements with Wikimedia projects include development of three OER computing course materials namely Programming Fundamentals with Java, Database Programming and Software Scalability and Reengineering for open access environment (WOU) with self-guided content integration using WikiBooks to cater for lifelong learning. During the creation of these three courses, I have initiated several webinar sessions (WizIQ) with course specialists, instructional designers, course coordinators, librarians who are newly to open educational resources to promote the use of OER in distance learning environment and to develop student-centered learning experiences around these open materials. I have ample opportunities to express my thoughts and share my experiences with the participants in OER repositories identification (using WikiBooks,OERCommons), OER repositories walkthrough, understanding the CC licensing to re-mix, improve and redistribute. The sessions conducted aimed to foster collaboration and encourage educators and learners to actively participate in the emerging open education movement.
I would like to progress further with my sharing of experiences with more learners as the OER movement grows. I wish to develop a shared vision and implementation strategies specifically in OER repositories walkthrough sessions as this has been the great challenges for OER course specialist in navigating OER materials for the first time. I would like to focus on the OER materials that I have developed using WikiBooks to share and showcase in Open Distance Learning (ODL) institutions in Asia to promote the development of new learning resources, stimulate improvement, innovation and reuse of OER and increase the visibility of WikiBooks as WikiBooks has been a well established OER repositories with free content textbooks and annotated texts. In completion of each sessions I have always highlighted that there are numerous hard work and contributions conducted in working towards completion of textbooks in WikiBooks on numerous subjects by the contributors. In addition, I would like to put forward the initiative of creating open-content textbook for the aforementioned three courses with the OER development team in WOU using WikiBooks environment.
Thank you for your considerations.
Much obliged,
shchung
Dear Jtud (WMF),
I would also like to propose the following initiatives in my institution:
i) Firstly, I would initiate discussion forum to share and provide a platform and environment for OER practitioners and newcomers to share knowledge and engage in WikiBooks and other Wikipedia Foundation projects, open source projects and initiatives.
ii) Creation of "Repositories" for sharing of resources, documentations, OER policies, Creative Commons (CC) licensing, research papers, articles, newsletters for users who shown interest in WikiBooks and OER development.
iii) To initiate sharing sessions and webinars to provide and bring together practitioners of the open educational system where OER advocates can share knowledge and actively participate in various activities.
iv) Showcases and demonstrations of exemplary WikiBooks projects, research innovations to increase awareness and exposure in WikiBooks and OER research related studies.
Thank you for your considerations.
Best regards,
shchung
