Question about your request

Dear @Ankitashukla:

The Participation Support Committee is glad to receive your request to attend the Grace Hopper Celebration India. We have a question we'd like you to answer before we make a decision about your request.

In the "Proposed Participation" section of your proposal, you've indicated that your goal is to further expand your horizon in tech and beyond. The committee would like to be clear that while this is a worthy personal goal, the criteria for our grant program is directed at volunteer efforts specifically in support of the Wikimedia strategic priorities, so we want to be sure you understand that your grant report would need to be focused on the ways your attendance at this conference has a positive impact on the Wikimedia movement. Many of our grantees do things like give a talk (formal or informal), lead a mealtime discussion, present a poster, or in some other way create opportunities to share knowledge about the Wikimedia projects. Could you say a little more about your plan to specifically support the Wikimedia projects while attending the conference?

Hi @Mjohnson: I apologise for not clearly stating my plan of action. I have several points in mind that I am planning to implement to evangelise about Wikimedia movement and get some new developers into the loop. Here is a detailed version:

• First and foremost, designing and printing flyers describing various Wikimedia projects and how can someone join in.
• GHCI will be attended by participants from across the country and some even from neighboring countries like Sri Lanka. Because India is such a diverse country with so many languages being spoken in various parts, I am planning to trap this awesome opportunity and get as many language contributors as possible during the event.
• I have also taken the initiative and created a Slack community. Participants can get invites to join this community by filling in this simple form.
  • With more people joining in, participants are using various channels on the Slack community to network and discuss how they can make the best out of the event. I have already created a #wikimedia channel on the community to bring together the active and willing-to-join contributors of Wikimedia.
  • I am also trying to connect to other participants from our organization to formulate an informal session with the partcipants in the three days of the conference.
• Moreover, because the event will be attended by a lot of students and specifically female students, I see an amazing opportunity of involving a large number of women contributors into the Wikimedia movement by taking active participation in various projects and roles.

Your outreach plan is still somewhat vague, so we encourage you to continue to develop it so that you will have good outcomes to report at the end of your grant.   • Since you mentions social media (twitter) and addressing many different languages, this learning pattern about harvesting new Wikimedians from social media may be relevant to you.
