Not Funded

[edit]

Hello JSFarman, thank you for submitting this rapid grant request. Unfortunately, we recently changed our Guidelines and Criteria and we no longer fund meetings/meet-ups. We are still happy to provide support for events that are focused on edit-a-thons, photo or writing contests, or photowalks. We are sorry we are unable to fund this request but would be happy to consider future requests in line with our new guidelines. Best regards, WJifar (WMF) (talk) 19:26, 5 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi WJifar (WMF). I am perplexed by this; Wikipedia Day directly encourages improvement on Wikimedia projects and recruits/encourages new editors. But thanks for the reply and the consideration. JSFarman (talk) 07:19, 6 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
Julie has very successfully organized Wikipedia Day LA around January for three years running with Rapid Grants, and here, in the fourth year, she is informed that she is ineligible as of December. The Wikipedia Day event is not a Meetup, it's a one-day conference, that attracts a majority of non-Wikimedians who are new people coming to the project, as a particularly effective form of a General promotion campaign. I've held meetups every month locally for 10 years in my own city, and they are quite different from a one-day conference. The very same table that disqualifies "Meetups" also lists Rapid Grants as the alternative for Grants:Conference for events under $2,000.--Pharos (talk) 03:25, 8 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hello JSFarman and Pharos, thank you for your input in terms of the decision we made on this grant, and for providing further context that has helped my understanding of this event. However, we are trying to make decisions more quickly so I found the program for Wikipedia Day LA 2018 and Wikipedia Day LA 2019 where it's listed as a meetup and I proceeded to treat it as such. Now digging into the past history of this event I understand it's the main gathering event for your community and an important space for connection and collaboration. If you would like to further pursue getting this proposal funded, I would like to recommend the following:
  1. Please answer the questions on the discussion page of Wikipedia Day LA 2019
  2. Could you address in your activities section what activities you will do to meet each of your project goals? And how you will know you have succeeded and do your impact metrics reflect that? For example, you've expressed interest in creating a monthly/bi-monthly calendar for the group, which we assume supports the goal of "building local awareness of Wikimedia activities within the region" but thus far it hasn't materialized so perhaps you can explore other impact metrics.
Please let me know the answers to these questions and we'll reconsider your proposal for Wikipedia Day LA 2020. Best regards, WJifar (WMF) (talk) 23:14, 11 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hi WJifar (WMF). I have answered the questions on the WPDay 2019 discussion page, and added details re: activities and how the impact can be measured on the WP Day 2020 grant proposal. Thank you! JSFarman (talk) 01:12, 16 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
