Hi Tenniscourtisland, and thanks for your report on WikiClub NT's activities. Here are my comments on your reported outcomes:

  • Do you know how many new editors created accounts through the WikiClub events?
  • I definitely understand the frustration around speedy deletions and tags. This is something I see reported at the Teahouse on English Wikipedia sometimes, and having run some events as a volunteer here in Chicago, some new contributors have reported this experience to me as well. I usually find it's better to take a more gradual approach and instruct new editors to on how to start a sandbox page and work at their own pace until they feel like they're ready. If they need more time, I invite them to follow-up with me by e-mail or on-wiki, or at a future session as needed.
  • The splitting of learning about Wikipedia and research / actual writing seems like a good strategy in terms of partitioning editors' time and giving them ample time for . Glad to hear this was effective and that you'll continue to use it.
  • I really liked seeing the broad set of biographies and topics covered in the event: a topical article on NT mining, an aboriginal community, a historic hotel, and a a cameleer! Many of these articles also include good quality images, so thanks for encouraging editors to add these in.

This report is officially approved. When you're able, please respond to my questions above. Congratulations on a successful series of events in the Northern Territory! I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 05:59, 20 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hello I JethroBT (WMF) (talk! Thanks for this and sorry for the slow response. I'm away at the moment so don't have access to my file, but I just did a quick approximation and it was about 32 new logins created. As for the issues around speedy deletions and tags, the Sandbox idea is definitely a good one. Although it does seem to be very rewarding for new editors to see actual results on their first attempt, a new page or a live edit. That seems to be very encouraging for them. Thanks for all the other feedback and for looking at this report! --87.2.165.148 07:40, 19 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
