Hi Papuass and Voll, and thanks for your submission for WLM in Latvia. I've approved this grant, but I did have one question regarding the prize funds. It looks like prizes will be distributed to the photographers of the top 10 photos mentioned in the proposal. What sort of prizes are going to be distributed at the awards ceremony? I would like to make sure that the prizes will not be too expensive or luxurious. I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 18:31, 24 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hello, I JethroBT (WMF)! Thank you for your interest in finer details of our proposal. We are planning to distribute the prize money between photographers of Top 10 images. As past experience shows, one person can have multiple images in top 10 (we had 5 for one contributor in WLE 2018, including winning image). We would not want to give most of money to a single participant, so we do not want to declare very strict rule yet (do you have suggestion on hot to do that keeping in mind this "problem"?). Speaking of total prize money — in the past we have tried with less money (Wiki Loves Earth Latvia 2017 with 300 EUR) and it was obvious that it was a bit too low. With current amount we are seeing enough interest from "serious photo hobbyists". --Papuass (talk) 15:25, 28 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Papuass: Thanks for this context Papuass regarding the prizes. I think giving out prizes to the top 10 images is a good approach in general. However, I think you should place a limit on the number of prizes that can be claimed by a single person. I am concerned that if one person is able to take a majority of the prize money, it may actually discourage people from entering the contest each year because they may learn they are not likely to win if there are a small number of people taking most of the prizes. This problem is especially true if there are major differences in photography skill, available equipment, and ability to travel among participants. I think the best way forward is to ask your participants or the Latvian community what an appropriate limit might be, and some of that surveying work can be done as as part of this grant. If you'd like a recommendation from me, I would suggest limiting the total number of images a person can have in the top 10 to three (3) total. I think limiting amount of top 10 images to 3 per person would be a reasonable addition to contest rules. --Papuass (talk) 07:37, 29 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
Initial response from other community members has been positive to this limitation. --Papuass (talk) 08:55, 29 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
