[edit]@PixelHacks: Hello PixelHacks team, thank you for your proposal to reduce the gender gap in tech through your engagement with high school girls. I have marked this proposal as ineligible for funding for the following reasons:
- Rapid Grants cannot be used to compensate people for their time, so the funding for the workshop instructors cannot be covered under this grant program.
-Yes, you're right. Does that cover workshop materials though?
- While developing skills in young women around technology, presentation, and multimedia are relevant to the mission of Wikimedia projects, the specific skills named, such as creative expression in the forms of UI/UX design, marketing, and the communication of a message or goal through artful design are not clearly linked to Wikimedia community needs or initiatives. Furthermore, using Wikimedia projects as platform for participants' ideas and products may be in conflict with many community policies or guidelines. See this example on English Wikipedia or these guidelines on Spanish Wikipedia.
-Granted, the latter was a concern of ours as well. We feel that most of the projects would draw information from or spread information regarding Wikimedia rather than creating new content. As for the first comment the aforementioned list of skills was unfortunately removed from the itinerary due to workshop scheduling conflicts; instead we prioritized tech education over that of the graphics end.
- The expected impact of this proposal in the context of Wikimedia projects is also unclear:several of the projects may have to do with Wikimedia. Participants will be offered Wikimedia as a platform for their ideas and products, as well as an essential source of information that they can both draw from or add to as they conduct their own research..
-Unfortunately our goals do not directly overlap with those of Wikimedia and we feel to create a separate category for Wikimedia content would throw off the intended project criteria for our event.
Thank you for your proposal, and please let me know if you have any questions. With thanks, I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 17:57, 21 January 2020 (UTC)
