Request reopened; Comments from WMF

Hello Ngozi osadebe, thank you for referring us to the expense documents you had previously sent to WMF over email. I have updated our records and reopened this request. I have also reviewed your proposal and have the following questions and requests:

• The total number of prizes (26) is high for an event with 50 participants. Please reduce the number of prizes by half and update your budget.
• The detailed budget you provided adds up to 723,300 NGN and not to 696,800 NGN. Please fix this discrepancy.
• Do you have a specific list of articles you will be working on?
• Please consider using the Outreach Dashboard to monitor the contributions of participants for your upcoming event.
• I just checked the reason one of the participants from your last event — User:Ifyobim — has been blocked on English Wikipedia and found out that the user has been doing harmful edits. What will you do to ensure that a similar situation will not happen again?
• I also noted that some of the new article creation requests from the last event have been declined, and I have a similar question for you. What will you do differently this time to make sure that the articles you create follow the guidelines of English Wikipedia?

My responses

• The number of participants to receive prizes (26 out of 50) may look high, but this is because we have many repeat participants. There are many people who have been consistent since the library started edit-a-thon in 2017. However, I have adjusted the number to half (13) as you suggested. I have also re-structured the statement on prizes of repeat participants to read " prizes for the first 7 repeat participants to enroll for the program".
• I have re-calculated the total amount to reflect the reduction in the number of people to receive prizes. This has taken care of the discrepancy in the previous calculation. The total amount requested now is NGN658,300 (USD1,797.9). Please forgive my poor arithmetic skill.
• Yes, we compiled a list of female academics in African Universities from the Commonwealth Universities Yearbook and the World of Learning. In past years, we worked on women in red list when we exhaust our list. We hope to do the same this year.
• Already, we have set up our outreach dash board. It can be located at: https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/Nnamdi_Azikiwe_Library,_University_of_Nigeria,_Nsukka/Nnamdi_Azikiwe_Library

We will use the dashboard to monitor the contributions of participants as well as the number of participants that registered for the program.

• User: IfyObim did harmful edits in 2019 only. She started editing with us in 2018. Last year (2019), she made the mistake of using a live Wikipedia article to teach one of her students to edit and thereafter, allowed the student to try editing through her account. She was therefore blocked. It was not intentional. She has been warned and the Library has reiterated its resolve that no undergraduate student will be involved in editing. I have also learnt from you that I can apply for IP block exemption to ensure that or editors are not blocked at the middle of our edit-a-thon.

• Some of the new article creation requests from our last event were declined because one of our editors "User:IfyObim" did disruptive editing (she allowed an undergraduate student to practice editing using her account) which resulted in the whole editors being denied article creation status. This year, only experienced editors (those who have been editing with us since 2017) will be allowed to create new articles. Others will edit existing articles. Moreover, we will organise series of trainings to sharpen the skills of our editors.

Hello User: Ngozi osadebe and thanks for submitting this grant request and for your continued effort to supporting Librarians in UNN to contributing to Wikipedia. This is greatly appreciated. I have gone through your request and I have some feedbacks for you.

1. Could you revise your grant request to include the username of the users leading this training? I am requesting this revision to enable the reviewing program officer to properly assess and evaluate these individuals.
2. Wrt IP Block, l think what you need is "Event coordinator" user right and not IP Block Exemption. The event coordinator right is usually granted by administrators on the English Wikipedia. You can request for the right here.

Finally, I'd encourage you to invite one or more experienced users in Nigeria to led the workshop rather than relying on remote coordination. Again, thanks for all your contributions. Regards. T Cells^Talk 14:01, 10 March 2020 (UTC)

Hi, User: DSaroyan.The people leading the program are myself User:Ngozi Osadebe and Delight Udochukwu [[User:      ]]. Please bear with me. I cannot remember Delight Udochukwu's user name off head. I cannot reach her now to ask for it. Her phone is down and I cannot delay this mail any longer. Every where in Nigeria is locked down as a result of the Covid -19 pandemic. I will send it to you once I contact her.
I think we can manage on our own without outside help. We have learnt a lot and have been through this three times (2017 till now). But if you insist, we have people in Nigeria Wikipedia User group that can help us. Last year, the Chairperson of the Nigeria Wikipedia User group, Mr Olusola Olaniyan was with us. However, after our edit-a-thon. I received a mail from WMF informing me that WMF will no longer support such visits.
I have taken the correction on how to avoid being blocked. When we re-schedule our event, I will request for Event Coordinator User right.
