Out of compliance

[edit]

Hi, Sophivorus, thank you for submitting this new grant application. Unfortunately, you are out of compliance with our requirements, due to overdue expense documentation and final reports from a previous grant. (Please see my email.) As a result, I am moving this proposal back to draft. Please feel free to re-propose it once you are again in compliance. Best regards, LSmith (WMF) (talk) 00:12, 7 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

@LSmith (WMF): Hi! I'm not sure I understand. My final report is clearly there, and it includes an expenses section. If something is wrong with it, I'll be glad to fill it in once you let me know, but please bear in mind that I haven't received feedback from the WMF or the community after submitting my final report, so if something is missing, I'm just learning about it. Looking forward to your reply, Sophivorus (talk) 01:16, 7 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
Ohh I see what you mean now. You're saying that I didn't send the documentation of my expenses to the email specified here? I'm really sorry, I missed that item (it's a long report) and I didn't get any feedback until now! Anyway, as I explain in my final report and in the project proposal, the only expense was my time. So should I produce an invoice for the WMF detailing my time devoted to the project? Or should I just email the WMF saying that there were no expenses paid? The guidelines don't seem to cover this. Sophivorus (talk) 01:25, 7 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hello Sophivorus, I'm responding on LSmith (WMF)'s behalf. Yes please send us an invoice for your time to <rapidgrants@wikimedia.org> so we can close up your other grant. Best regards, WJifar (WMF) (talk) 06:32, 7 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Not Funded

[edit]

Hello Sophivorus, thank you for submitting your report and for doing a great job on it. Unfortunately, we will not be able to fund this grant request. I understand that you are making a case for the gadget because there are people who are continuing to use it on the old editor but given that, that would eventually be replaced by the new wikitext editor, we cannot allocate more movement funds towards a project that will eventually be rendered obsolete. Thank you again for the work you do in the movement and I do hope we will be able to support you on a different project in the future. Best regards, WJifar (WMF) (talk) 23:52, 26 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

@WJifar (WMF): Thanks for taking the time to consider the project. Sophivorus (talk) 00:02, 27 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
@WJifar (WMF): >I understand that you are making a case for the gadget because there are people who are continuing to use it on the old editor but given that
I am sorry, but the author wants to fix this problem and make the gadget work with the new wikitext editor (look at description).
>we cannot allocate more movement funds towards a project that will eventually be rendered obsolete
I apologize again, but I did not understand this sentence a little. Iniquity (talk) 10:55, 28 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hello Iniquity thank you for your interest in understanding this decision further. I direct you back to what the applicant wrote on the proposal, "Furthermore, I expected the use of the gadget to decline because of the arrival of the new wikitext editor, which the gadget doesn't support." He says clearly here that the gadget doesn't support the new wikitext editor. Please let me know if I am misunderstanding this. The applicant's agreement with the decision further leads me to believe that I understood this correctly. Best regards, WJifar (WMF) (talk) 07:35, 1 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
@WJifar (WMF): thanks for the answer. Yes, at the moment the gadget does not support the new wikitext editor, but the first point in the project plan is the following statement: Make the gadget work with the new wikitext editor. Iniquity (talk) 10:12, 1 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
@WJifar (WMF): Indeed, one of the first priorities of this project (if not the first) is to make the gadget compatible with the new wikitext editor. Sorry if the proposal turned out a bit confusing. Does this clarification change anything? Sophivorus (talk) 13:48, 6 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
@WJifar (WMF): Hi can we get some more response on this? I definitely use this gadget all the time, and I would like to be able to use it in the new wikitext editor as well, so I think this grant money would be well spent to enhance it so it can be made to work with the new wikitext editor as well as the Visual Editor. -Furicorn (talk) 02:00, 24 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
Hello Sophivorus, thank you for clarifying this point. I will revisit your proposal shortly and provide an update. Thank you Furicorn as well for the additional ping. Best regards, WJifar (WMF) (talk) 03:02, 26 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

@LSmith (WMF): Hi! Can I ask you to read this last conversation, and leave a comment please? Thanks! Sophivorus (talk) 13:09, 13 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Sophivorus, thanks for reaching out. I'm a grants coordinator, not a program officer, which means I can't make funding decisions. At this point it's no longer my place to step into the conversation. I'm sorry! Best regards, LSmith (WMF) (talk) 21:40, 13 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Grant request approved

Hello, Sophivorus; thank you for this grant proposal and for your patience with the severe delays with our Rapid Grants review process the last few months. We are approving your grant request and looking forward to these improvements to the ProveIt gadget. Regards, MMontes (WMF) (talk) 19:27, 9 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Update

[edit]

Hi! Two months have gone by and tomorrow is the official closing date of the grant. I just pushed the latest code to production on all tracked Wikipedias (after days of testing on the English and Spanish wikis). The main news is full support for the 2017 wikitext editor (which required major code refactoring) but also there are several interface improvements, new features and bug fixes. However, I'm still a bit short of my goals and expectations for this grant, so I will continue working on the gadget during the coming weeks. Now that the big change is out, I will focus on new features, bug fixes, documenting and automating stuff, and spreading the gadget. The final report will include all the details. Cheers! Sophivorus (talk) 19:05, 13 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi again! To be more precise: I would like to change the end date of this project to October 14. The reasons are: first, making the gadget compatible with new wikitext editor (and with my current code quality standards) required a lot more refactoring than expected. Second, when I requested this grant at the beginning of the year, I had little else going on, but when the grant was finally approved some months later, I was already into other projects that required some time of their own and delayed this project. Finally, and most important, when I delved deep into the code and the project, I realized that some of the original goals did not make sense. The most important function of this gadget, the reason why it's useful, is because it avoids us having to deal with complex wikitext. So it made plenty of sense to make the gadget work with the new wikitext editor (which it now does!). However, for the same reason, it didn't make a lot of sense to make the gadget work with the visual editor, since the visual editor already has a visual interface to deal with references! Therefore, I'm requesting an end date extension to make up for this missing functionality, by fixing more bugs, adding more requested features, automating some stuff that should be automated, and spreading the gadget to more wikis. Well, a month has gone by and I just submitted the final report. Looking forward to your review! Sophivorus (talk) 17:24, 15 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
