Comments from WMF
[edit]Hello, ginabacklit; thank you for submitting your grant request. We have the following questions and comments:
- Other than Stuart Prior (WMUK), will other Wikimedians facilitate in this event? 50 participants is too high a number for a single experienced Wikimedian. If so, please provide their usernames and/or have them chime in on this page.
The event has 30 places for participants to book onto. We currently have 20 participants booked onto the event. There are no other Wikimedians involved in facilitating this workshop. The event has the following structure: 11:00am – 11:30am Arrival, Refreshments and Introduction to Workshop. 11:30am – 11:45am Tour of Familiar Machines Exhibition (Providing stimulus for the workshop). 11:45am – 12:30pm Discussion of themes (Taking themes from the Familiar Machines exhibition to set the tone of the workshop) 12:30pm – 1:30pm Introduction to Wikipedia, By Stuart Prior 1:00pm – 2:00pm Lunch Break 2:00pm – 3:30pm Wikipedia Editing 3:30pm – 4:00pm Reflection on workshop & Networking
- Can you please provide more details about the Resources item in your budget?
This would enable us to purchase a selection of books on the subjects of art, feminism, gender, decolonising curatorial practices, and the local art ecology. The books would be used by participants to help them in editing articles, checking facts and fuelling further discussion and debate on these topics.
Feminist Futures of Spatial Pratice (Ramia Maze) - £30 Invisible Women: Exposing Data Bia in a World Designed for Men (Caroline Criado Perez) - £15 Forgotten Women: The Artists (Zing Tsjeng) - £15 Men Explain Things To Me & Other Essays (Rebecca Solnit) - £10 The Rules Do Not Apply (Ariel Levy) - £10 Delusions of Gender: The Real Science Behind Sex Differences (Cordelia Fine) - £10 The ABC's of LGBT+ (Ashley Mardell) - £10 Trans Teen Survival Guide (Owl and Fox Fisher) - £10 Whitewalling: Art, Race and Protest (Aruna D'Souza) - £20 The Master's Tools Will never Dismantle the Master's House (Audre Lorde) - £1 Feminist Theory: From Margin to Centre (Bell Hooks) - £19 Total = £150
- Can you please provide more details about the travel expenses item?
This amount is for the reimbursement of travel expenses (bus / train tickets) to enable participants to attend the workshop. If the rapid grant was successful, this would be offered to participants as a travel bursary to support them in attending. A day ticket for bus travel costs £4. We anticipate that there may also be interest from participants across the region (Nottingham, Derby, Leicester) and so there may be participants traveling via train. A return ticket for train travel within the region can cost up to £15.

Further comments from WMF
[edit]Hello, ginabacklit; thank you for your responses to our questions. Even if the number of participants is 30 rather than 50, having one single experienced Wikimedian will not be sufficient to help facilitate and troubleshoot. We are interested in funding this editathon and seeing it succeed. Please bring at least two more experienced Wikimedians on board, at least for the editing part of the program. Regards, MMontes (WMF) (talk) 16:02, 15 May 2019 (UTC)
- Hi @MMontes (WMF):, attendance is 20-30, I will be supporting as an experienced trainer and editathon planner. We have planned activities, resources and workflow in advance. This makes the management of larger attendee numbers possible. We will have remote support from User:John Cummings and User:Richard Nevell (WMUK) as well. I hope this allays any concerns over capacity. Stuart Prior (WMUK) (talk) 14:11, 17 May 2019 (UTC)
- @MMontes (WMF): Like Stuart says, I'll also be on hand to provide remote assistance. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 16:11, 20 May 2019 (UTC)
- Hello, ginabacklit; we are willing to discuss the possibility of hosting the event even if only one experienced Wikimedian can participate in person. Can Stuart Prior (WMUK), User:John Cummings, and User:Richard Nevell (WMUK) chime in with a bit of background about their experience managing workflows and participating in art + feminism and Wiki activities with gender-based considerations? We have found that these editathons pose a unique set of challenges and we want to ensure that the experience does not backfire on edits of already marginalized topics, sometimes contributed by already marginalized editors themselves. Regards, MMontes (WMF) (talk) 15:52, 28 May 2019 (UTC)
Hi @MMontes (WMF): for my part I've worked in Wikimedia events and programmatic work for 6 years and I've designed and ran projects focused on the gender gap and other aspects of representation such as Amnesty and Wikipedia and BBC 100 Women, as well as facilitating numerous UK Art + Feminism events since 2015. Grant request approved

Grant withdrawn
[edit]ginabacklit signed an agreement for this grant request; however, it has been decided to withdraw it and cancel the payment because the approval came too late and Backlit Gallery carried out the editathon without the expenses proposed in this request.
