General Support Fund proposal approved in the amount of IDR 6,485,318,000 for 2023 to 2024

[edit]

Congratulations! Your grant is approved in the amount of IDR 6,485,318,000 with a grant term starting 1 July 2023 and ending 30 June 2024.

The changes we see:

  • In the last 12 months, we observed that Wikimedia Indonesia has gradually pivoted from online to offline activities as COVID-19 restrictions were lifted. We observed efforts to continue to revive the passion and interest of communities within Indonesia and recognise increased efforts to reach out to partners (existing and new) within and outside the Wikimedia movement.
  • Thank you also for sharing specific learnings about
    • Your recent innovation in combining Wikibook training with a Children’s story writing competition, thus attracting new participation from Indonesian communities and external organisations.
    • Community retention through a Diff blog post published in Nov 2022
    • Adjustments you are making to your microgrants programme to encourage more members of the community to be involved in  activities and to bring them closer
  • Comparing 2022/2023 application vis-a-vis 2023/2024 application, we also noted that there is more thought put into identifying metrics to capture change. We encourage you to continue to use the learning, sharing and evaluation space to identify key learning questions and metrics that capture the process, outputs and outcomes of your work. The metrics are there to help you answer your learning questions.
  • We recognise your efforts to build a more sustainable organisation and would like to suggest a further conversation with your Programme Officer around the management of your severance and reserve funds

Snippets from the ESEAP Funds Committee::

  • (AD): The proposal clearly determines the targets and provides strategies to achieve them. There are many language projects in Indonesia, and the chapter has clear plans on how to sustain and develop them.  The chapter has always done an excellent job and I hope they would be willing to share their expertise to other groups within the region.
  • (YS): The application and the budget sheet were very clear to make me understand how their governance was organised. The way of organisation can be a model for others.
  • (BB): The chapter continues to innovate and also maintain programs and activities that draw large interest/ participation of newcomers as well as longtime community members. We hope greater visibility through social media and other communications activities with known partners such as Creative Commons Indonesia, OSM Indonesia as well as UNESCO. We hope the affiliate can play a bigger role in capacitating other Wikimedia affiliates, their alliance partners in the country or local communities.
  • (BB): We are curious about their plans of reaching out to communities east of the Wallace Line. Another is their funding strategy for supporting community members going to Wikimania 2024 in Poland which will happen in July 2024, just 1-3 months after the end of their budget cycle.

Opportunities that we see:

  • Continued dialogue with your Programme Officer and exploring  potential areas of collaboration and support (you require or can provide) within or outside the Wikimedia movement as Wikimedia Indonesia finalises your multi-year strategic plan for 2023-2027. This can span resourcing, programmes, partnerships, public policy, product and technology etc
  • Exploring opportunities to contribute to learning culture and sharing or resources in the ESEAP region

Snippets from WMF Staff (thematic focused)

  • (RB): it is unclear what they intend to do in terms of expanding the technical team. Do they intend to contribute directly to the product development work or do they want to have staff who can help users navigate the products that may be piloted on the wikis in Indonesian languages, or would like to provide consultations to the product development team (in most cases within the WMF Product department) for relevant research or other insights. If they have not already, it might be good to suggest to them to read the draft annual plan objectives of product and technology, particularly the Wikiexperiences, and Future audiences section for any immediate or foreseeable expansion scope: Wikimedia Foundation Annual Plan/2023-2024/Draft/Product & Technology/OKRs - Meta

Next steps

  • Let’s continue having regular conversations over the course of your grant implementation. Do set up a regular schedule to connect with your ESEAP Programme Officer based on your needs.
  • The reporting requirements for the grant can be found here and templates are available here.  Timelines for reporting can be found in your grant agreement or on Fluxx. All reports are to be completed and submitted via Fluxx.

Once again, Congratulations!

We thank you for your participation in the grant application process and hope to continue to journey with you as you embark on a new year of project implementation.
