@Senolatzo: hi, and thanks for your idea! I wondered if you could tell me whether you already have a list of identified-topics/articles you would like to see the teams of students focus on during this project? I also am curious about the final report that will be compiled - do you anticipate this report shedding insight on some of the challenges with socializing newcomers to Wikipedia and/or editing with the specific intent to address gender bias? Hi @Senolatzo:, thanks for posting this Idea! I think it's got heaps of potential and I wanted to check in and see if you are interested in developing it further as a grant proposal -- the Inspire campaign is offering $250,000 in grants funding to gendergap-related projects. Hi @Thepwnco:@Skud:@Skud (WMF):, thanks for your comments and enthusiasm! @Thepwnco: I do have a list of ideas for articles: Women in North Korea, Women in China, Transgender in China, Tongzhi, Women in Japan, Salaryman, Geisha, Shinjuku Boys, Women in Hong Kong, Mosuo Women, Nakhi People, and Mosuo. Also, I would hope that other more general pages could also be edited, so that general pages about gender could be edited to ensure some representation of East Asian gender categories.

Yes, I think the report would touch on both of those issues: how best to educate newcomers about Wikipedia protocol and processes, and how best to address gender bias. For example, many pages exist for Women in (country), but gender studies nowadays is very interested in masculinity studies and men in a country too, as well as queer identities. So the report could address ways to address that, too. It could certainly include information about how findings could be applied to other initiatives, though I would need to learn more about those initiatives to reply effectively!

Hi Senolatzo! Thanks so much for your idea to lead lead students at Furman University in an editing project targeting gender in East Asia. You’re 3-stage plan, with built-in peer feedback, is clear and feasible. I have a few initial questions to help think through some of the project details:

1. Your project focuses on improving articles that address the topic area of gender in East Asia. Have you thought about how you will identify the articles your students will work on? Have you considered reaching out to relevant WikiProjects on English Wikipedia for the purpose of coordinating your efforts and identifying interested participants and advisors? You may also want to use social networking sites to reach out to editing communities relevant to your topic.
2. Considering your experience using Wikipedia in the classroom, we’re wondering if you have thoughts or strategies for the longer-term impact of this project. How do you envision supporting students who would like to continue editing?
3. Your budget includes an iPad to facilitate outdoor editing and showcasing of edits. Can you provide more information about how you will stage outdoor editing and the role it plays in the project? How will the iPad help you to build visibility? Can you also provide more details on the role of the Technical Advisor? It seems that a local experienced Wikimedian might be best placed to fulfill this role as they are often able to provide this type of support in a volunteer capacity. In order for us to better assess the funds for refreshments, it would be helpful to know how many students you expect to attend each event.
4. Consider adding more quantitative measures of success to your project. For example, you might include “We hope that 10% of participants become active editors over the next X months.” Ideally, your goals should be realistic but also a stretch.

Response to initial feedback

Hi User: Mjohnson (WMF), thanks for your interest! I'll respond to each point below.

1. I have used some of the WikiProjects topics to find ideas for articles, like the Gender Studies WikiProject: Women in South Korea, Women in North Korea, Women in China, Gender Inequality in China, Transgender in China, Tongzhi, Women in Japan, Salaryman, Geisha, Shinjuku Boys, Women in Hong Kong, Mosuo Women, Nakhi People, and Mosuo. I would definitely like to include others from these projects in the process. Guidance on how to reach out would be welcomed.
2. Creating or strengthening student editing teams would be one way to keep the project going. A university could have a Wikipedians student organization with a faculty advisor. Another possibility is that students could be named to the Wikipedia University Student Team, or be named a Wikipedia University Fellow, or somehow have an official title and group membership that would designate them and recognize their contributions. Perhaps an annual Student Wikipedian Summit could be hosted by different universities to allow those students to gather and share ideas. Specific underrepresented groups could be targeted to attend with financial support, if available.
3. 1) I envision that the editing session would happen in the Student Center commons, an area with flatscreen TVs, and on the porch outside the Student Center, weather permitting. The iPad would be used to project edits onto the screen. People would bring their own devices for editing, and periodically take turns editing from the connected iPad, so that their edits could be shown real-time. This public editing session would generate buzz, possibly provide a model for ongoing edit sessions, encourage others to get involved with editing, and raise visibility for our project. 2) User: Cgheesling is a local Wikimedian who would be involved in the project. He may be willing to volunteer, but if funds are available, it would be nice to recognize his extra time inputs on the project with some monetary rewards. 3) I estimate between 25-50 students would attend the events. All items in the budget are ballpark figures and open to revision.
4. Quantitative measures of success are welcome. Thank you for the suggestion. Here are the new measures: 1) We hope that 10% of participants become active editors over the next 12 months. 2) We hope that 30% of participants become occasional editors over the next 12 months. I do believe that once people understand how the process works, when they see a mistake, they will go ahead and contribute a better source or a correction. I believe these are reasonable targets because realistically, not everyone will edit every day after the project ends, but 10% may well continue editing, and 30% may stay involved in some way. I would also send a follow up survey 3 months later, 6 months after the project ends, 9 months later, and 12 months later, as a gentle nudge to ask people about their involvement and encourage it.

Additional comments from the Committee: Underrepresented topic area on Wikipedia English with potential impact on both content and contributors. I'd like to see more details, such as a list of relevant articles that need improvement. Would increase diversity of content, though I'm not sure how it could be adapted to other languages/projects. Professor is well placed to network and bring in more people on their campus and at other colleges Good, offline community support but would like to see more online support/engagement. Consider reaching out to WikiProjects on Wikipedia English and looking for interested participants and advisers Suggest advertising on social networks (relevant open data communities) We wonder: How will teams be incentivized to participate? How will community engagement be sustained? Appreciate the professor's willingness to share their knowledge and experience Time frame on the proposal page does not seem feasible, but can be adjusted Recommend that an experienced local Wikipedian assist with training students Focus on fair-use images could be expanded to include cc-by-SA and other free licenses. Appreciate that feedback is built into the project Would like clarification about the purpose of writing the reports. Finding a way to share results with the greater Wikimedia movement would be good.
