Grants talk:IdeaLab/Wikipedia Metrics for Institutions/GLAM
Add topicGrants talk:IdeaLab/Wikipedia Metrics for Institutions/GLAM This proposal is similar to Grants talk:IdeaLab/Wikipedia Metrics for Institutions, but is considering the design of a tool specifically for Museums and Cultural Heritage Institutions with Permanent Collections, and Archival Collections.
Technical design
[edit]A tool is designed which has input fields including the following.
- accepts a group of articles that are grouped together within a Wikipedia category. I.E. Category:Paintings of the Frick Collection.
- accepts the URL of a Wikipedia page
- accepts a start date
- accepts an end date.
Given these inputs, the tool checks the existing pageview counting tool at http://stats.grok.se and returns a single number, which is the sum of pageviews for each article during the listed time frame.

[edit]Some specific organizations are named in these examples. These organizations know nothing about this proposal and are not involved in it.
Example Procedure
[edit]- An institution is curious how many people use Wikipedia to get information about the paintings in its collection. They plan to add information and links to their research materials to Wikipedia and would like traffic reports to measure how many people they can reach if they have their experts develop articles on Wikipedia. They want to target their editing using metrics.
- After putting information in the articles, they tag each article with the category Category:Paintings in (my Institution name), and they set a time range of January 1, 2013-present. They also create a larger parent category Category:Collections of (my institution) where all articles related to their institutional collections are aggregated.
- They use this tool and in return, they get a spreadsheet with the month views for the articles tagged within that category.
Here is an example of input:
- Please give a URL to be processed: Category:Paintings of the Frick Collection.
Please give a date from which to start the pageview count:
- January 1, 2013.
Please give the last day or desired last day of the pageview count:
- Continuous, per month.
Scale
[edit]Scale of the number of articles within the report would depend on the institution. Some institutions may consider automating the process of finding and categorizing Wikipedia articles related to their institutional collections, archive, or history.
Watchlists vs. tagging Collections
[edit]- One option would be having institutions or professional organizations create watchlists for top Wikipedia articles in their field. I.E. Wikipedia:GLAM/Metropolitan New York Library Council/Libraries watchlist - another option would be using categories to tag all articles related to an institution or field, rather than a select list. Both methods need more community discussion related to best practices.
