How does this differ from existing Gender Gap work?
[edit]How does this proposal differ from the existing gender gap mailing list or [en:WikiProject Countering systemic bias/Gender gap task force]? --Skud (WMF) (talk) 00:49, 10 March 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Skud (WMF) I think this is different from the gender gap mailing list because that is just to promote communication and help in information dissemination with the aim of furthering the interest of women but it is not a body or a committee that can actually ensure that women have that needed attention. I believe what the campaign seeks to achieve is to get a body or committee solely tasked to ensure that the issue of gender inclusion is actually enforced and results are achieved.--Rberchie (talk) 20:48, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Skud (WMF) I believe my brother Rberchie has rightly justified the goals for this idea, but i however wish to add that his group will solely be resposible for putting measures in place to increase women participation through enforcing campaigns, suggesting ideas to encourage women participation, setting yearly targets in working at bridging the gap, research on what best practices may help women actively engage all year long, etc. This body will also serve as a taskforce to ensure there is progress in this area. - Thanks Rberchie and Flixtey for your replies :) So what I'm hearing here is that this group is 1) smaller, 2) has a selected membership (presumably of well qualified/experienced people), 3) dedicates more focused time to the cause, and 4) has a greater degree of authority in setting strategy, making recommendations, granting funds, etc. Is that right? If so I think it might be good to outline the details of this in the proposal, eg. "A committee of 8 people who are selected based on these criteria..." Another thing to consider would be, do you expect this group to make decisions that the wider wikimedia community would be expected to follow, because that probably won't work! So for instance with the item, "Ensure a minimum of 20% of women/girls participation in global community activities", how would they actually be able to do that? --Skud (WMF) (talk) 02:26, 19 March 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks Skud (WMF) for your reply. So in answering your questions 1) Yes 2) Yes and this bit (presumably of well qualified/experienced people) very necessary 3) Yes 4) Yes. I think your concerns are genuine but i would dare to say that a group solely tasked with this cause, will be efficient in making substantial progress on whatever targets are set. Please note however that this body will not impose anything on the global community but rather liaise with Project and Event Grants team, Grant Advisory Committee, Funds Dissemination Committee, Chapter executives, community managers, team heads and event leads or organizers to find the best way (at their own convenience yet achieving results) of addressing issues relating to gender. All these other committees have worked because we believe in the people handling the affairs in that group. How does the FDC and other advisory committees work? That's because we have all accepted their existence and decisions made on the behalf of all.Flixtey (talk) 07:18, 19 March 2015 (UTC)
