Grants talk:IEG/Wikipedian in Residence for Gender Equity/Midpoint
Add topicReport approved
[edit]Hello KellyDoyle,
Thank you for this Midpoint Report, and congratulations on your progress to date! As a new Wikipedian, you've taken on a big learning curve, but the experience you bring from your community organizing background is clear in your focus on partnerships, trainings and supporting new and existing editors.
Your point is well taken about the potential harassment that editors may face when addressing the gender gap in Wikipedia content. We want you to have as much support as you need, both for yourself and for the volunteers you work with, when it comes to harassment.
In regard to the restrictions around direct editing: We appreciate your willingness to refrain from editing about women, thus far, in order to avoid the perception of a Wikipedian in Residence engaging in paid content creation, and to maintain a clear focus on your primary role to support volunteer content creation. That said, we can understand that you need more direct exposure to issues of gender equity when editing non-male biographies, in order to better support volunteers. We still suggest that you avoid editing about women in West Virginia, or anyone associated with WVU, to continue to avoid the perception of paid editing. However, editing non-male biographies about people who are not from West Virginia is acceptable, so long as it is during your volunteer time (not while at work) and using your volunteer account (not your WiR account). Your working hours should continue to be focused on things like building partnerships, hosting trainings, organizing events and working with librarians to compile resources and create article lists.
In our next check-in, let's talk about whether there are any other supports that would be useful to you with regard to responding to harassment.
I'm accepting this Midpoint Report today and approving your request to drop the quarterly reporting requirement. As discussed on the phone, WMF is happy to accept one Midpoint Report and one Final Report, spaced six months apart, along with monthly updates in the "timeline & progress" tab.
Our Grants Administrator will be in touch with you about your next disbursement.
Best regards,
