Grants talk:IEG/Wikipedian in Residence for Gender Equity/Final

As the person who was given the grant by the Wikimedia Foundation and who wrote the original proposal for the position establishment of the West Virginia University Libraries’ Wikipedian in Residence for Gender Equity, and the person who guided the process to write a position description and search widely for candidates who could do the job with distinction, I want to add a statement here as a part of the project’s final report.

We at WVU Libraries have been privileged to collaborate with the Wikimedia Foundation this year as partners to experiment with a way to support a Wikipedian in Residence for Gender Equity. We want to lead other academic libraries in this direction as we know how important this work is and how much need there is for expansion of opportunities for women to address internationally, not only the gender gap in Wikipedia content, but also its content gap about under-represented people.

We were fortunate to find our Wikipedian in Residence for Gender Equity through our search, and when she began work in October of 2015, her fit with the job became clear very quickly. She has delivered a stellar performance that met and exceeded the goals of the Wikimedia Foundation as well as the WVU Libraries. This report outlines the outstanding contributions she has made to both Wikipedia and West Virginia University and she has demonstrated what true outreach to new audiences can mean for us all. To her great credit she has built a solid foundation for continued experimentation and productivity in the future.

In closing, I want to acknowledge my mentors in the Wikipedia community whose guidance was invaluable as I wrote the original proposal to the Wikimedia Foundation. Also the mentors from the Wikimedia Foundation and the Wikipedia community who guided our WiR throughout her first year have been critical to the overall success of this program. We here at WVU Libraries are standing on the shoulders of those who have given us this opportunity to work together and we are all deeply grateful and pleased with our collective results.

It is really exciting to see the outcomes and learning from this grant, congrats on a successful year! Leadership development is an outcome that has proven difficult for our movement to measure in the short-term, but it is clear to me that is also what we're seeing here. Kelly, you've become a go-to member of the North American Wikimedia community over the past year, which is no easy feat for a newbie. I can see that the expertise that Kelly has built over the past year, thanks to joint support from WVU and WMF, and combined with her demonstrated talent for community organizing, will serve the Wikimedia movement well for years to come. Here's looking forward to seeing this unexpected model of engaging sororities and other groups with a service component to expand over time, as it appears to be very promising! Where can I see the 300 new editors mentioned in the numbers? w:en:Wikipedia:GLAM/WVU/Participants lists only 3 participants and w:en:Wikipedia:GLAM/WVU/Welcome#Outcomes lists a few articles created/edited by perhaps a handful new users (I could find w:en:User:Stsauter, w:en:User:Dremerling, w:en:User:ThunderRoad14, w:en:User:Awest2). --Nemo 16:06, 10 June 2017 (UTC)
