i18n

[edit]

The extension is among those without i18n support due to being unmaintained: translatewiki:Thread:Support/Support_of_MediaWiki_extensions_on_SVN_dropped. Are you going to address the i18n issues which were reported since 2009 and not addressed? --Nemo 14:23, 13 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Deadline reminder, and eligibility question

[edit]

Hi Dmitriy,

Thanks for your contributions to MediaWiki and for taking the time to start this draft! Just a reminder that completed proposals for this round are due 30 September - once you've finished adding any further information, please let us know you're ready for eligibility checks and review by updating your infobox to status=PROPOSED.

2 questions you might want to consider as you're finalizing your proposal:

  1. You mention that this project could "in theory" be useful for Wikiversity. We're quite skeptical of funding software that doesn't have a strong community plan to make use of the resulting code...because at the end of the day, we'd like to see code be used in the service of community projects, meeting people's active needs as they work on Wikimedia sites, etc. Have you reached out to Wikiversity or other communities that you think might be interested in your ideas for enhanced functionality? If so, we'd love to see their input here (or links to any discussions you've started with them on another wiki).
  2. I'm not sure that your project as currently outlined will meet our eligibility requirements, to be honest, so I'd encourage you to look at the eligibility requirements for IEGs again, as you consider what would be needed to implement your changes to the extension in question. WMF engineering can't offer their time to grantees for merging or code review. Is there a volunteer with the appropriate permissions who would be able to review the changes you make to ensure the code would be able to get used by the community by the end of this project?

Best wishes for finishing your draft, and please let me know if I can clarify anything here! Cheers, Siko (WMF) (talk) 18:55, 25 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Polling software for Wikipedia

[edit]

This sounds like a great idea, because I think it would be great to be able to do polling better on Wikipedia - just think how much easier RfC's would be to conduct without wading through all the text on those pages! Unfortunately, development efforts are problematic for IEG grants - see the notes by Siko above. Don't worry about the deadline, you can always sharpen up your proposal and turn it in for the next round. You may need to split this proposal up into pieces, such as first creating the business case (how having the software will reduce the load of effort for bureaucrats on all wikis and so forth) and then trying to get approval up front from the engineering team, etc. Jane023 (talk) 16:44, 28 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
