- Sharihareswara (WMF) (talk) 23:01, 26 April 2013 (UTC) I have spoken at Open Source Bridge three times and can speak to the value of the community at that conference. I believe Noopur28's talk will be especially valuable to Open Source Bridge participants in understanding the Indian free culture and free software environment (and thus how to collaborate better with Indian communities).
- Aeschright (talk) 21:30, 8 May 2013 (UTC) Open Source Bridge organizing committee member
- Christiekoehler (talk) 22:28, 8 May 2013 (UTC) I co-chair Open Source Bridge with Reid. We are very much looking forward to having Noopur28 speak this year.
Budget breakdown
[edit]- Accommodation: 18,19,20,21 June (4 night) @ $25/night (Hostelling International ~ tentative) = USD 100
- Travel from San Francisco - Portland and back: USD 200~ (economy flight)
- Food/miscellaneous expenses (4 days): USD 200
(Note: I checked the GSA for Portland and it is USD 113 (75% of that would be USD 84. I understand that GSA covers meals and stay. My current budget breakup is covered under GSA limit)
- Student registration for the event: $99 (has now been waived, hence not required. Refer talk page)
Proposed Participation
[edit]How would your participation at this event further the Wikimedia Mission?
- EDIT: I have been awarded travel support from India to San Francisco for Adacamp, San Francisco (June 9-11). That is why I do not require international travel support anymore. I only need travel support from San Francisco to Portland and back to San Francisco as well as accommodation in Portland.
I am an enthusiastic Wikipedian and have been engaged in parallel research on making Wikipedia more inclusive and accessible. At OSB, I will be speaking about Failure and Wikipedia. This is mostly about doing Open Source and Free Knowledge work in developing countries and the challenges that I faced during my GLAM project. These challenges are not logistical or merely those of access but we need to really revisit how Open Wikipedia is and see if that is affecting diverse users from coming in. I will be presenting a case study there.
- Here is the link to my talk at OSB '13.
Goal and Expected Impact
[edit]As a result of my talk, people will hopefully understand the way English Wikipedia in particular has evolved but its relationship with non-native English speakers continues to be a troubled one. I have also been editing Wikipedia tactically with scholars from HASTAC and hope to get more ideas on building fembots such as the one imagined in this post.
