Grants:TPS/Millars/Wikimania/2016/Report
Welcome back from Wikimania 2016!
Participant
[edit]Spanish Wikipedia, but also Wikimedia Commons and other projects.
Outcome
[edit]- Option 3: New Creation: What was one useful outcome that was created at the event for the Wikimedia movement?
- Add a link to something new that was created as a result of your participation in this event (for example, you might link to a new tool that you and your co-participants worked on at the Hackathon, or to pages created in a workshop you participated in).
I joined the 100 wikidays challenge. I started on July 23, because I have had a travel where I did not have Internet connection and I knoew I could not edit till that date. I'm sharing my experience via Facebook.
Before Wikimania I received the proposal of organizing a wiki contest about Olympics Games. I proposed that to Wikimedia Spain and also to Iberocoop during Wikimania. Here you have the main page of the contest: Wiki Loves the Olympics.
Connections
[edit]Learning days
[edit]I could attend the pre-conference. There I participated at the learning days where I presented a poster and a lightning talk about a university experience. This is a five years program at University Jaume I. Students translate articles from one language to another and this program is still growing (more languages and looking for more universities).
Discussion room
[edit]During the main conference I was the facilitator of one of the discussion rooms (after being asked by Lodewijk) and I took notes of another. The session that I was the facilitator was this one about content translation across Wikipedias. There were about 17 attendants. The session where I took note was this one, facilitated by Fuzheado
Wikimedia España
[edit]I could met other members of Wikimedia Spain who attended the conference: Rodelar, Poco a poco, B25es, Jaluj, 19Tarrestnom65, Tsaorin, Superzerocool, ProtoplasmaKid, Góngora and Ezarate. I spent some time at the community village, where Wikimedia Spain had a desk. At the community village I could talk with the girls from Egypt, people from Levant, Israel and talked about organizing some activities together like a GLAM collaboration about Roman baths.
Iberocoop
[edit]I facilitated also the meet-up of Iberocoop: see this page. We talked about different issues like a future conference in Spain, state of the network and new groups who joined it and future activities. I met also other members of Iberocoop like the Argentinian delegation (Anna Torres, Giselle Bordoy (WMAR), Galio, Banfield, Lucas, and it was the first time I met their new employee for education: Luisina Ferrante (WMAR), and other countries like Chile (Superzerocool, Warko and Osmar), Venezuela (Oscar .), Brazil (Celio, Vinicius and Vitor Mazuco), Mexico (Wotancito), Switzerland (Ilario), Wikimujeres (Montserrat Boix andd Esther Bonet) or Uruguay (NaBUru38). I talked with a lot of volunteers and people of Wikimedia Italy like Ginevra Sanvitale, Lorenzo Losa, Cristian Consoni, Andrea Zanni, Simone Cortesi, Luca Martinelli or Marco Chemello. And of course, Iolanda Pensa.
Boards and chairpersons
[edit]I could talked with the new ED of WMF, Katherine Maher and other members or former members of the board (Christophe Henner, Nataliia Tymkiv, María Sefidari, Patricio Lorente, Frieda Brioschi or James Heilman). I met some other chairs of Wikimedia affiliates and board members (Kiril Simeonovski, Filip Maljkovic, Frans Grijzenhout or Pharos and other I mentioned in other parts of the report) and I attended the chairperson meeting where we could meet Katherine, Nataliia and Christophe and also talked about the future of Wikimania and after Wikimania some of us signed a letter to support the idea of an anual Wikimania. I knew Hogne Meteland (Chair of WMNO) and Émeric Vallespi (WMFR).
Other
[edit]I met also Catalan speaking people and the Amical Wikimedia delegation: Ferran, Lluis, Coentor, Esther Solé. Xaber Cañas (Basque Wikipedia) invited me to attend an event in San Sebastian but I could not accept and other people of WMES attended that event. It is a very good experience to talk with people of other groups of the same country and seeing that nowadays the relationships are quite good. I talk with Carlos Herández-Lahoz, employee of Fundación Princesa de Asturias and member of Wikimania Spain about how to improve the chapter and the activities in Asturias.
This was an opportunity to talk with people of the staff like Asaf (we talked about the situation of Wikimedia Spain and Iberocoop), María Cruz, Kacie Harold, Qgil-WMF, Elitre (WMF), Quiddity (WMF), Edward Galvez, or Vahir.
I met people I knew before: Lodewijk, Lian Wyatt, Anne-Laure Prévost, Martin Rulsh, Benoit Rochon, John Cummings, Xabier Cañas, Cornelius, Bence Damokos, Romaine, Nahid Sultan, Habib M'henni, etc. Other people I met for the first time (among other I mentioned before) were Adam Cuerden, Satdeep Gill, Reem Al-Kashif, Daria Cybulska (WMUK), Fjmustak, Sailesh Patnaik or Hindustanilanguage among others mentioned before and other I can't list here (I can't remember all of them).
