Outcome
[edit]Meeting so many African wikipedians at the conference has intitaited a number of collaborations with AfroCROWD UK included the AfroCine project lead by User:Jamie Tubers and working to develop a project with a number of museums in the south east of England. I partcipated in two panels at Wikimania:
- Centering Knowledge from the Margins: A Whose Knowledge? discussion
- AfroCROWD: expanding into the African Diaspora - an estimated 70 people attended
I also partcipated in a number of workshops including Black Lunch Table's meetup All Power to the People: Access + Equity on Wikipedia
Connections
[edit]The most outstanding outcome of my participation in Wikimania was making in-person connections with wikimedians in Africa. Made connections with Wikimedians from Ghana, Botswana and Nigeria which are resulting in collaborations including working on the Yoruba and Igbo language wikipedias and other opportunities for collaboration. Since returning to London I've supporting Martin Dittrus, who gave the first keynote, in the development of new resources that demonstrate knowledge inequity.
The pre-conference Decolonizing the Internet created the opportunity to have more new voices and new faces participate in Wikimania, and initiated a critical intervention in expanding the fellowship of the attendees.
