Participant connections

• User:Satdeep_Gill: Satdeep was another wiki contributor in FOSSASIA. He works on Content Translation and had conducted a workshop too on the same. We're hoping to combining the two efforts together (a Spelling Dictionary and Content Translation) and start working forward.
• David Effendi from ChorusText. He had a few concerns about how MediaWiki can help chorustext in getting more language related data. I discussed his use case and informed him about localisation, internationlaisation systems in Mediawiki and also informed him about ULS (ChorusText probably has a use case for ULS too)
• Daniel Pocock, prominent Debian contributor
• I also met Stephanie Taylor (Program Manager, Google Summer of Code)
• Kushal Das from the Fedora and Python community
• Alexandre Lision, one of the contributors to The Ring project
• I also met people from different open source organisations like github, redhat, owncloud, ring etc.

Outcome

Option 1: Shared Experience: What is one way you shared something from your experience with your community (either locally or globally), after the event?

I have written a blog post describing in detail my experience at FOSSASIA 2016, here. :)

Option 2: Learning Pattern: What is one useful learning pattern you can share with the Wikimedia movement?

Also, some previous research into the type of the audience helped me to customize my talk accordingly. For FOSSASIA, below are the insights into the audience diversity:

• Not everyone is from a tech background
• There are various native speakers of several languages
• The talks have an audience strength of around 40 people on an average
• The audience has many students too (who are willing to take the opportunity of involving themselves with open source)

Keeping these points in mind, I had planned on moving ahead with discussing the extension with focus on:

• basic key idea
• motivation
• how was it created
• challenges faced
• future work
• explain steps for installing the extension
• a slide showing lal the links to relevant webpages
• questions- 2-3 mins

In short, for a conference like FOSSASIA, it's better to not get into lots of technicality - since people are not prepared and not all are from tech background. it's better to rather discuss the idea behind the project.

I have created a learning pattern here for the above content.

Finances

The following expenses were directly paid by the WMF:

• Travel (round trip airfare from New Delhi to Singapore): USD 519.90
• Accommodation: SGD 317
• Speaker Ticket for the event = SGD 325

The following expenses are to be reimbursed:

• Visa: 30 SGD
• Local Transport : 99.48 SGD + 1352 INR
• Food : 57.05 SGD + 136 INR

• TOTAL = 186.53 SGD + 1488 INR ~ 10561.22 INR
