- Option 1: Shared Experience: What is one way you shared something from your experience with your community (either locally or globally), after the event?
I learned a lot during Wikimania 2018, and I tried to share as much as possible. Here are some of the most useful things I learned at Wikimania and shared (or will share) with my local community.
- During the conference, I made notes and summaries of the events I attended. Throughout Wikimania, I was publishing them on the site of my chapter, Wikimedia Ukraine. See wmua:Вікіманія 2018 (this page was also expanded by other Wikimania participants from Ukraine). Also, I regularly published some of the most interesting highlights on Wikimedia Ukraine's Facebook page (some examples: 1, 2, 3).
- After Wikimania, I published a blog post based on some ideas I learned. Written in Ukrainian for Wikimedia Ukraine's blog, this analytic article is devoted to the issue of decolonization of knowledge, which was extensively discussed at Wikimania.
- I delivered a talk during Ukrainian Wikiconference in Kyiv, which was held on August 24th-26th. The topic of my talk was directly connected to Wikimania as I presented 5 interesting ideas of projects which can be implemented by Ukrainian Wikipedia and/or Wikimedia Ukraine on the basis of the international experience I learned at Wikimania. Slides of my presentation are available on Commons.
Connections
[edit]I met dozens of people at Wikimania, both those whom I had already known before and those whom I met for the first time, and made dozens of new Facebook friends :) It is hardly possible to list all of them, so I will try to divide them into general groups:
- Those who attended Learning Days. The format of Learning Days is perfect for meeting new people and engaging in useful discussions in small groups. I got acquainted with a lot of people, and it was interesting to hear the experience of wikimedians from Thailand, UK, Spain, US, and various other countries. I delivered a lightning talk during the first day of Learning Days, and some 20-25 people attended it.
- People working on gender diversity. I have been working on diversity issues within the Wikimedia movement recently, so I aimed to talk with people from other countries, from United States to Germany to India, about their experience.
- Wikimedians from CEE region. Due to our shared interests (and the proximity of our cultures), it was also a group I spent plenty of time talking with.
Of course, I made connections with many other people, those are just the biggest common groups.
As an example of the usefulness of Wikimania connections — folks from the Netherlands told me about their cheat sheet on visual editing. I liked the idea and already translated this cheat sheet from English into Ukrainian. After it is formatted, I am going to publish it on Commons and start distributing it during wiki-trainings within a few weeks.
Anything else
[edit]Here is the link to my presentation's slides I mentioned above — commons:File:Gender Equity Lighting Talk (Learning Days, Wikimania 2018).pdf. I took some photos with my smartphone, but I do not think they are quality enough to be uploaded to Commons.
Thanks for Wikimania and for the opportunity to attend it!
