Introduction

Wikimedia Tunisia User Group is a local User Group of the Wikimedia Foundation since May 2014. Its mission is to promote the Wikimedia Foundation and its projects in Tunisia. It was the first user group to be recognized in the Arabic region and African continent.

Goals

  • To aid and encourage people to collect, develop and disseminate knowledge and other educational, cultural and historic content in the public domain or under a license that allows everyone to freely use, distribute and modify said content without the payment of royalties.
  • To recruit technically and non-technically minded people to participate to Wikimedia projects.

2021 programs overview

Wikimedia Tunisia Annual Meetup

Description

Wikimedia tunisia has elected its first board in december 2019. The group has maintained a fairly rich and varied activity, despite the global circumstances and the restrictions caused by the pandemic. Tha annaual meeting is an opprtunity to bring together the Tunisian community in the same place, in order to discuss, evaluate and plan the actions of the group.

  3. General Assembly and election of the new board of the user group.

Reporting and evaluation of the 2020-2022 period. Electing the new board of the Wikimedia Tunisia User Group for the 2022-2024 period.

Metrics and targets

WikiDesert

Description

Wikidesert is an invitation to explore the remote points of the Tunisian desert and its oasis and take pictures of them over a weekend.

Key activities
  • 7 professional photographers will take a group excursion to undocumented places in the South of Tunisia
  • Visit of the South of Tunisia: Oued Souf, Oung jemel, Dimass, Tataouine, Gabes and Nefta
SMART goals of the overall program
  • Reducing the distortion of the coverage of Tunisian landscapes and regions, particularly the ones located in the South, in Wikimedia Commons and indirectly in the other Wikimedia Projects.
Metrics and targets
  • Release at least of 2.000 pictures with 50 featured ones.

WikiCamp

Description

Weekend bootcamp with workshops for 30 people, from different regions, in Zaghouan with a photowalk to collect material from 4 heritage sites.

    • Wikipedia ethics.
    • Writing articles,

In order to fill an identified content gap in Wikimedia projects about Zaghouan.

Metrics and targets

This boocamp will increase the number of articles about the national heritage monuments in the region.

  • About 7.000 images (with 200 featured/quality pictures) will be uploaded on wikimedia Commons.
  • 10 articles will be developped in differetn languages about Zaghouan.

Wikipedian in Residence

Description

After contacting the director of museums in Tunisia at the National Heritage Institute and presenting the importance of the Wiki Projects for GLAM institutions like museums, he provided a positive answer for the collaboration with Wikimedia Tunisia. Through this collaboration, Wikimedia Tunisia will try to place a Wikimedian in Residence at the National Heritage Institute that covering one or more museums.

Key activities

The role will require the following tasks:

  • Documenting the museums collections on Commons by adding photos and SDC
  • Documenting the museums collections on Wikidata creating items for mosaics and statues
  • Documenting the museums collections on Wikipedia.
  • Training of the museums staff on Wiki projects and free licence.

Duration of workː 20 hours/week for 6 months

  • Establishing links between the Wikimedia Community in Tunisia and the GLAMs.
  • Developing the awareness of Arts and Humanities research community in Tunisia about the value of Wikimedia projects as an initiative for cultural heritage

Wiki contests

Description

Two main contests will be organized by Wikimedia Tunisiaː one to upload new photos as part of the Wiki Loves Monuments contest and the second is to improve wikipedia articles with photos from commons as part of the Wikipedia Pages Want Photos contest. The last time that Tunisia organised Wiki Loves monuments was on 2018, and since this year new monuments have added to the official list, Wikimedia Tunisia is looking forward to organizing a new edition of this contest. Several Wikipedia pages with content related to Tunisia can be improved using existing photos from Commons. Wikimedia Tunisia would like forward to organising a local contest related to adding photos to pages related to Tunisia.

WikiClubs in universities

Description

Higher education and Wikipedia are inseparable. Students and teachers often do not understand the true place of Wikipedia. University Wikiclubs are a direct means of promoting Wikimedia projects.

These clubs will be an opportunity to educate academics on the message that wiki projects want to convey.

Wikimedia open days in 5 universities before the end of 2021

Establishing for the first time, WikiClubs in Tunisian universities which will facilitate later the launching of Education programs in the country.
