[edit]Strategic plan
[edit]- The former 2018-2020 Strategic Plan continues in effect while the Board of Directors works with Barretto Consulting to develop the new plan.
Introduction
[edit]Wikimedia New York City brings New York together to share in a richer and more representative free knowledge ecosystem. We draw from our knowledge, passion, partnerships, and flexibility to create community, educate users, and facilitate content contributions through programs and events.
Programs
[edit]Chapter Membership and Community
This program area focuses on fostering community and connections among our members and Wikimedians through social gatherings and events. Whereas events like edit-a-thons play an important role in building community, their primary function is content development and participant training. Our community includes long-time editors, librarians, journalists, educators, activists, photographers, community organizers, students, retirees, developers, and artists, each of whom have their own motivations for engaging with Wikimedia projects broadly and the Wikimedia NYC community specifically. This program area focuses on those activities which take community as their primary purpose, like our monthly WikiWednesday Salon, annual Wiknic and Wikipedia Day celebrations, and participation in national and global events that connect our local members with the larger Wikimedia movement.
The last year has presented significant challenges to connecting Wikipedians in the New York area. Each of our programmatic focuses have shifted online, yielding new attendance from longtime Wikipedians, but also resulting in a reduced number of new and potential members. In the 2021-2022 grant period, Wikimedia NYC will experiment with a hybrid approach to its programming, provided meeting in person can be done safely. There will be challenges as the spaces previously used for WikiWednesday and our annual Wikipedia Day celebration are no longer available. However, this presents an opportunity to broaden our network and rethink our accessibility.
We will know we're successful when:
- Wikimedia NYC hosts 10 WikiWednesdays in a year, evaluating attendance at in-person versus online events.
- Wikimedia NYC expands its programmatic approach by hosting two community-focused events other than WikiWednesday.
- Contingent upon hiring an ED, Wikimedia NYC will research member satisfaction. This could include an evaluation of the effectiveness of different programmatic approaches. Wikimedia NYC will then share local activities and lessons learned by sending two representatives to local and national Wikimedia events and/or contributing a Learning Pattern.
Outreach and Education
The outreach and education program area focuses on activities that promote and advance the work of the Chapter and its vision for open knowledge. We will activate the education of New Yorkers through trainings and workshops which provide them with the knowledge and skills to participate and share in a richer, more representative free knowledge ecosystem. Wikimedia New York City is incredibly fortunate to exist in such a diverse place as New York, and since its founding has been deeply committed to encouraging the participation and representation of the people, cultures, and communities which call it home. While most of our work takes place at a local scale, the spirit of representation and free knowledge outreach and education have led several projects which began here, like AfroCrowd, Art + Feminism, and the “Wiki Loves …” initiatives, to have a catalyzing, replicable, global impact. In the coming year, we will continue this work while also integrating discussions of the larger free culture movement into our programming.
We will know we are successful when:
- Wikimedia NYC hosts 30 edit-a-thons in thematic areas that support knowledge equity
- Wikimedia NYC hosts two events that educate New Yorkers on issues relevant to the larger free culture movement
- Contingent upon hiring an Executive Director, Wikimedia NYC leads development of training materials and/or train-the-trainer resources
Partnerships
The partnerships program area provides support for programming and content contributions in collaboration with institutional partners. However, as a volunteer organization, Wikimedia NYC has been inconsistent in its support of existing partners, and has not had the capacity to foster new relationships in support of its mission and aims. Informed by over ten years of organizational experience and its current strategic planning process, the Wikimedia NYC Board of Directors aims to hire a full-time Executive Director, who will devote part of their time to supporting and fostering partnerships.
We will know we are successful when:
- Contingent upon hiring the ED, Wikimedia NYC will focus on both defining what it means to be a partner of Wikimedia NYC and build capacity for mutually beneficial relationships.

Programs Impact
[edit]Chapter Membership and Community
From July 2021 to June 2023 (2-year period), WMNYC hosted 65 events, with 18 of them being WikiWednesdays. We almost met our goal of 10 WikiWednesdays in a year. We partially met our goal of evaluating attendance at in-person versus online events. Chapter members used the dashboard initially; however, due to increased requirements of hybrid events, the chapter no longer had the capacity to operate dashboards, with event organizers at WMNYC tracking attendance manually.
Wikimedia NYC hosted 7 specifically community-focused events other than WikiWeds (in particular, outdoor meetups to account for the then-ongoing Covid19 pandemic) over a two-year period.
Since WMNYC did not hire an ED during this period, the chapter did not have capacity to research member satisfaction.
Outreach and Education
WMNYC hosted 65 total events over the two years, with 40 being in the Outreach and Education program area or the Partnerships program area. (The latter kind of events served the purposes of outreach and education as well.) With most of these events having been edit-a-thons or having had a facilitated-editing component, the goal of hosting 30 edit-a-thons in thematic areas that support knowledge equity has been easily met.
Wikimedia NYC set a goal to support and promote the larger free culture movement with at least two events a year. The chapter exceeded that goal as many events focused on environmental issues, cultural heritage, and underrepresented communities, which all align with values central to the free culture movement. Over two years, the chapter hosted 11 events in support or related to the free culture movement.
Since WMNYC was unable to hire an Executive Director during this grant period, and therefore did not develop training materials and/or train-the-trainer resources.
Partnerships
Over the two years, WMNYC engaged in 31 co-host events with partners.
