- Generate a feeling of trust in Wikimedia among cultural institutions we work with by continuing effective collaborations with four institutions that involve 50 active editors and with three institutions agreeing when surveyed that Wikimedia is an effective partner and they are more confident in doing Wikimedia-related work after the collaboration than they were before the collaboration.
The summer months are usually not suitable for organize activities due to holidays; most of the institutions and educational centres reduce their activity and staff and the public is not usually available, so organize activities is not satisfactory.
However we have maintained numerous meetings with several institutions, being the results a series of already approved activities in autumn. For example, we will hold two edit-a-thons in the National Archaeological Museum and the González Martí National Museum of Ceramics and Decorative Arts. Also, we have talked to the Museum of Romanticism about organize an online challenge but especially on uploading more images to Wikimedia Commons; this is, for them, the best way of collaboration and want to continue it.
Moreover, we will soon begin to work with the Ciudad y el Mar, Castillo de Mata Museum and in fact we have already carried out some action. The municipality of Bimenes showed interest in collaborating in the same way Ayora or Sueca do, and we hope to initiate collaboration throughout this academic year. Regarding institutions that we had already worked, in the library of the University of Cadiz we held some workshops attending 10 editors. In other sessions, for example a course with the University of Oviedo, attended 27 editors.
- Achievement of free materials by involving cultural institutions in the development of quality content, with 2,000 items released by 2 partners, and 200 items used in Wikimedia articles.
In these three months has been released 25 files from one institution, the Royal Spanish Academy. It is their first experience uploading material to Wikimedia Commons, but if positive will continue providing material. On the other hand, we have agreed with a project on the Spanish-Portuguese border to upload several thousand of files, audio, video and images; it is an ethnographic project, information gathering, so the files will be of high quality and usefulness.
- Increase the quality and quantity of Wikimedia content, with 4,100 media uploaded (820 unique images used) and 1,270 articles improved or created through content activities.
As a result of the different activities of Wikimedia Spain, in these three months have been uploaded 10,700 files to Wikimedia Commons: 9,449 from Wiki Loves Monuments, 857 from Wiki Takes Sueca, 277 from Wiki Takes Caesaraugusta and 117 from events coverage. On October 19, 2736 articles used images obtained these months.
Improvement or creation of content has resulted more than 1,200 articles edited in different languages, thanks to writing contests as Castles Challenge, organized together with Wikimedia Armenia (283 articles), and Wiki Loves the Olympics, organized together with Iberocoop; we are still reviewing the articles edited, but they are more than 1,000.
- Increase the participation of editors by involving 55 new editors in content activities.
The number of new contributors, thanks to content activities is 217; 27 from the Wikipedia workshops in Asturias, 10 from the workshops in the library of the University of Cádiz and 180 from Wiki Loves Monuments.
- Increase and develop collaboration process with Spanish universities and other educational institutions, involving students and professors in activities of content quality improvement.
With the start of the new academic year, we have continued the collaborations that we had with several universities. In Madrid began a new edition of the Wikipedia activity of the Polytechnic University of Madrid, where students improve articles on physics. In Castellón, the translation activity involves, this year, to English, Spanish and Catalan, in four different courses.
In the School of Architecture of the Polytechnic University of Valencia we continue the collaboration started the last year, improving articles about female architects, and, at the same university, the Equality Unit talked with us about organize a regular group of work on women and equality. Also, in the University of Valencia, continue the edition activity, this year at the School of Sociology, being improvised by students articles about women and feminism.
In Cádiz, one more year, we will support the Free Software University Contest. In Zaragoza, we are talking with several professors about introduce Wikipedia as part of the education of the students. Finally, the High School of Toreno, with which we collaborate for two years, will organize more Wikipedia related activities with the students.
COMMUNITY
- Continuing the development of the internal infrastructure of the chapter in order to increase our capacity to better support local groups.
We have organized three wikimeetings in these last three months. In July, we had a meeting in the Canary Islands; our first member there organized a first meeting attended by other Wikipedians of the islands. This is a great step towards organizing activities in the future, the first of which was held in October. This will facilitate the consolidation of a group of local volunteers.
In August, a new meeting of local volunteers was held in Asturias, both from Spanish Wikipedia and Asturian Wikipedia. It coincided with a meeting with a city council in order to prepare future activities involving the local community of editors of Asturian Wikipedia.
Finally, in September, we organized our 4th Wikimedia Conference, in Zaragoza. The three-days event was very successful and it involved more than 50 people, both volunteers of Wikimedia and volunteers from free software movement. The first day, several local groups of Zaragoza talked about their work; the second day several projects were presented by Basque Wikimedians User Group, Amical Wikimedia, OpenStreetMap and Wikimedia Spain; and the third day we organized the Wiki Takes Caesaraugusta.
- Increase collaboration with local communities by partnering with 25 volunteers on seven different projects in seven different regions throughout Spain.
In these months, more than 50 people (volunteers) have participated in activities partnering by Wikimedia Spain, in 9 different provinces. The events coverage involved 3 people in Murcia, Pontevedra and Castellón. The workshops in Asturias and Cádiz involved 2 more people.
In July, 4 members attended the the editathon Peace Treaties in Art, in San Sebastián, organized by the Basque Wikimedians User Group. Volunteers from Basque Country, France, Malta and Spain participated, being very successful and strengthening relations between different Wikimedia groups. This has facilitated communication and discussion on the joint organization of future activities or meetings. During Wiki Loves Monuments 2016, an event to take pictures was organized by the Office of Free software of the University of Granada, involving 4 people. They are not member of Wikimedia Spain but they are committed to the Wikimedia projects and they are always open to organize activities or events.
The two Wiki Takes events organized in these months were very succesful. In Sueca (Valencia) participated 11 people and were covered different monuments and the Paella International Contest. Besides the 11 volunteers it was very important the collaboration of several local people who facilitated our work. After the good result, the city council wish to continue the collaboration and we are already talking about covering future events, such as the International Mime Festival.
The other Wiki Takes was in Zaragoza, during our IV Wikimedia Conference, and near 30 people covered the roman museums of the city. We also must include our project of pictures of municipalities, with several contributing editors from Castile and Leon, Madrid and the Land of Valencia, principally
- Increase membership from 99 to 130.
Data of October 18: 28 female, 97 male = 125. Net increase: 26.
- Increase diffusion and visibility of the chapter in society. Chapter diffusion in society can be measured through statistics: followers on social media like twitter or facebook, number of blog posts and visits to them and number of mentions in the press.
On October 19, followers on social networks were 3070 in Twitter and 1321 in Facebook. The number of posts in this last three months were 10, both in WMES and WMF blogs. OBJECTIVES
Generate a feeling of trust in Wikimedia among cultural institutions we work with by continuing effective collaborations with four institutions that involve 50 active editors and with three institutions agreeing when surveyed that Wikimedia is an effective partner and they are more confident in doing Wikimedia-related work after the collaboration than they were before the collaboration.
Despite this fund period includes the summer months, usually not suitable for organize activities due to holidays, we have maintained numerous meetings with cultural institutions. As result of some of these meetings, we held two edit-a-thons in institutions we worked before like the National Library of Spain (involving 27 editors) and Saregune (involving 15 editors). Other institutions that we had already worked are the library of the University of Cadiz, where we held some workshops, attending 10 editors; a course with the University of Oviedo, attending 27 editors, and one more course in the University of Valladolid, attending 4 editors.
Also we organized three more edit-a-thons in the González Martí National Museum of Ceramics and Decorative Arts of Valencia, Ciudad y el Mar Castillo de Mata Museum of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Energy Museum of Ponferrada, the three of them new GLAM collaborations. They were a success and the institutions confirmed their desire to organize more activities; as an example the González Martí National Museum will upload images of his collection coming soon, relying on the relevance of use their materials in Wikimedia projects. In the case of the other two museums, the lack of local content encourages them to carry out activities to make the local heritage visible through the Internet.
Other meetings with institutions include the Museum of Romanticism, the municipality of Bimenes, the municipality of Cuéllar or the Archaeological Museum of Alicante, all of them interested in organize activities
