Program story[edit]

Content Creation[edit]

The year 2021 was a great one for the User Group, this wouldn't have been possible without the Annual Grant. One of our main goals for this year 2021 is to increase the number of contents in Igbo Language across various Wikimedia platforms. To achieve this goal, between January - December 2021, we organized edit a thons, created contents, trained/mentored new editors/leaders to co-ordinate newly created Wiki Hubs and Clubs to reach out to other communities that are not within our catchment area.

We also supported our community members with internal grants to host trainings in the newly created Hubs (the Librarians Hub, Nnamdi Azikiwe Fan Club, Anambra state, Abia State Hub, Wikidata Hub. These trainings helped to improve awareness of Wikimedia and it's projects and interest from others across various states in the South East e.g (The University of Nigeria Nsukka where we're going to be launching a Fan Club in 2022, increase content across various Igbo Language platforms. These activities resulted to an addition of over 600 translations into Igbo Wikipedia, over 700 pages improved and increased the number of newly registered editors by 60.

We are also proud to know that in March 2021, Igbo Wikipedia was recognized as the Wikipedia with the highest number of women editors. Tochiprecious being selected as a Focus Member of Wiki Loves Women and participating in the #SheSaid campaign reignited the Igbo Wikiquote in the incubator hence our adopting the project as part of our content creation focus in 2021.

We also hosted a Wiktionary edit a thon and challenge titled 100 words Challenge for Igbo Wiktionary which started on the 18th of June to end on the 17th of July. So far, this has generated over 800 new words and definitions. This means that we are over 600 words more than our 200 new words goal for 2021. We also had over 11 million pageviews on Igbo Wikipedia meaning that more people are benefiting from our inputs.

Because we want to increase the number of contents in Igbo Language across Wikimedia platforms, we also applied for the Wikidata Lexicographical data focus languages by Wikimedia Deutschland and Igbo was selected as one of the focus languages. So far, we now have Wikidata Igbo lexemes forms template and have added over 2250 Igbo lexemes to Wikidata. During the Wikidata Conference 2021, Tochiprecious was on a panel with the Wikidata Co-founder (Denny) to talk about Igbo and Abstract Wikipedia. Our Wikidata Hub also won the Community project award on the award giving day of the conference.

We also joined and are locally hosting the Wikipedia Pages Wanting Campaign which started on the 1st of July where we've improved over 70 Igbo Wikipedia and 30 English Wikipedia pages with pictures.

At the Wiki Indaba 2021 Conference the Igbo Wikimedians User Group was recognized alongside two other User Groups as the User Groups making impacts in the region in 2021. Our Wiktionary project in the incubator was also recognized as one of the fast growing projects.

All of these impacts wouldn't have been possible without the Annual Grant and we're total grateful for the opportunity.
