Wikimedia Community Fund budget

In the fiscal year 2024–2025 (FY24–25, July 2024 – June 2025), as a next step towards shifting towards greater equity in decision-making and joint accountability, the Wikimedia Foundation partnered with Affiliates and Regional Funds Committees to determine the regional allocation for the Community Fund budget for FY24–25. In alignment with our Annual Plan commitment to engage in greater multi-year planning - and support affiliates to do the same - we are also offering a three-year projection of the grants budget. To determine the regional allocations, we used the following two inputs:

  • Weighted Average Inflation by region: Inflation in each country in the region (using IMF data), weighted by the size of last year’s grant to the Affiliate(s) in that country

Expected growth of existing Affiliates & projected newcomers based on Program Officer discussions with Affiliates as part of renewal process. We recognize that we do not fund all expected growth, but we take our understanding of growth need, in addition to expected newcomers, into account when making determinations. Taking all input and feedback into consideration, here is the approved Community Fund budget for FY24–25. A region-by-region budget rationale is offered below.

You can learn more about the approach and process taken to inform the approved budget on the Diff post (link to be added soon).

*Inflation data is based on IMF's most recent inflation data for each country as of March 2024. The inflation for each region is a weighted average by weighing the size of the grants in that country relative to the total grants in that region. Using the weighted average rather than the simple average, allows us to fully fund the cost of inflation in each country. Whereas a simple average would not fully cover inflation in several regions. Example of a weighted average calculation: Imagine a region has two grants. 100,000$ grant to country A. Country A has inflation rate of 10%. One other grant to Country B of 10,000$. Country B has inflation rate of 2%. The weighted average = 100,000$/110,000$ * 10% + 10,000$/110,000$ * 2% = 9.3%. (The simple average would be 6% in this example.)

**The figures in this table are from our financial records and can vary slightly from reports and grant proposals on Meta and other sources due to timing and foreign exchange rate differences.
