Goals
[edit]Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?
- Im very happy in how things went in this first Open Glam Mexico. I met the goals of communicating the projects we are involved with as a chapter in Uruguay, speccialy the ones regarding digitization, glam, copyright clearance and (a good) copyright reform.
Outcome
[edit]Please report on your original project targets.

I was able to properly communicate this topics to the public of the two panels i was invited as a speaker. The panel i attended on September 5th was specifically oriented to the Mexican public sector as well as the general public regarding the GLAM projects we are involved in as a movement, the importance of digitization and the use of free licenses and public domain identification and recovery. In the panel of the second day, (September 6th) i talked about copyright reform, specially in Mexico (the copyright term there is 100 years post mortem), to enable broad heritage recovery projects, and was able to engage some key member of the public sector regarding the creation of a database like autores.uy for digitization and copyright clearance. An unexpected result of this talks was that i was invited to give 3 workshops in the Universidad del Claustro de Sor Juana, targeting students of 18-26 years which i did the following days. | The main goal of this talks was to establish or improve existing collaborations between the Wikimedia Movement and the public sector, raise awareness regarding free culture, copyright reform, digitization and GLAM collaborations. According to Wikimedia Mexico, 300 people attended the activities and the videos of the workshops were viewed by around 3200 people. Following the panels, people from the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes (National Institute of Fine Arts) approached Wikimedia Mexico members to explore the possibility of a joint initiative for copyright clearense and digitization using the autores.uy model. |
Learning
[edit]Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:
- What worked well?
I think i achieved the main goal that was to communicate the projects the uruguayan chapter is involved in (digitization, glam and copyright clearance) to key members of the Mexican government as well as to reach the broad public to raise awareness regarding copyright reform (specially the mexican copyright term, and the lack of limitation and exceptions in their law).
- What did not work so well?
Between the panels and the workshops in the Universidad del Claustro de Sor Juana i had little time to plan a workshop with Wikimedia Mexico members regarding Wikidata and other topics they had shown interest in talking about. Nevertheless i was able to have informal talks with many of them regarding this projects and our experience in Uruguay.
- What would you do differently next time?
A better planning from my end to ensure i will have enough time to have workshops with the local Wikimedia community as well as some unexpected requests of the public and educational sector, like the ones i had in this trip.
