Women in Design aims to create and improve articles about all non - cis men marginalised genders involved in design, in India. To start with we want to identify women associated with NID and their contribution to design fields, whether it is contribution in the establishment of the institute, partaking in/heading design projects and/or pedagogy, etc. We would also like to make this knowledge and material accessible in simple Hindi and Gujarati as most of this discourse only exists within the English speaking world.
targetWikipedia & Wikimedia commons in English, Hindi and Gujarati. Also add feminist and design vocabulary to Wiktionary Hindi to start with.

Project Plan

[edit]

Activities

[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

Starting with a meet-up, followed by an edit-a-thon, a panel and another edit-a-thon, it is a series of four events over span of two months. It will include access to training videos throughout the said period. Before starting the events we will have informal sessions with students, faculty, alumni of NID and whoever wants to join to introduce the events.

2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.

We will notify by sending emails to the NID mailings lists and also put up posters on the NID campus. We will also be spreading the word through Facebook and Instagram using posters/GIFs. There will be one general poster informing about all the events and we will release 4 more event relevant posters gradually. Rest, through phone calls and WhatsApp. Have also shared the event on A+F Slack channel.

3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?

We will work on it with the regional ambassador. Meanwhile, the applicant is editing relevant articles and training themselves. Medhavigandhi has offered to conduct training sessions.

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high-quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Yes, participants have the equipment and skills, and they will be supported through making training videos available at all times during the events. The staff of the institution library (Knowledge Management Centre) will support the events by providing books, papers, projects, etc., Will be using NID Zoom accounts to connect with online participants

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

We will have follow up meets post edit-a-thons, where we will address queries and future goals. Additionally, we have started a slack channel where all participants will be added #wmn-in-design-nid-meetup-panel-edit-a-thon , to update and share information and ideas.

6. Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:

Yes, the event will be a hybrid one. With both offline and online participation. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1uFg-FuS83cCxt81vOAIkVUQF35joKnFDKuiKjgWxukk/edit?usp=sharing

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

Through the series of events NID Archives would like to engage students and young designers along with faculty, researchers, and designers, with creating and editing articles about the contribution of women and other marginalized genders in the history of design at NID, and in India/South Asia. As a majority of the volunteers won't be able to join us in person, we'd like to buy them food online and also post goodies like postcards, stickers, posters, etc. to them (within India).

Impact

[edit]

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  1. Number of events 04
  2. Number of participants 60-80
  3. Number of new editors 10
  4. Number of articles created or improved 20-30 (focusing on creating new articles)
  5. Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events) 20 - 25

Resources

[edit]
