Project Goal

[edit]

Choose one or more of the following goals. You can add or delete goals as needed.

  1. Increase skills for existing editors, e.g. in Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons
  2. Add or improve content on LGBT+ issues in a wide range of topics, focusing on basic articles and concepts around LGBT+
  3. Strengthen ownership and affiliation with the Wikimedia LGBT+ user group among existing LGBT+ contributors
  4. Show that the Wikimedia movement supports LGBT+ issues and has proud queer contributors
  5. Increase diversity on Wikimedia projects and the visibility of LGBT+ projects

Project Plan

[edit]

Activities

[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

It will be a multi-day edit-a-thon from 11 to 16 June 2019. This is a follow-up project of the Europride projects in Madrid in 2017 and in Stockholm in 2018. Some of the participants will be recurring participants from the previous years, most will be new participants in the event series who want to get more involved in LGBT+ issues in the Wikiverse.

2. How will you let your community know about the event? Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions.

We have already announced the project via the mailing list, Facebook group and talk page of the LGBT+ user group, during the LGBT+ meetup at Wikimedia Summit and in social media channels related to previous pride and queer Wikimedia events.

3. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event?

Yes. User:Shikeishu has organized several summer camps, trainings and edit-a-thons around Wikimedia projects in Austria and Sweden since 2015 (see Wikipedia for Peace, which he has initiated). He is a member of the Wikimedia LGBT+ user group.

4. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Most participants are experienced users, who either work for Wikimedia chapters or are experienced Wikipedia contributors. So far no newcomers to Wikimedia projects have applied, but we are also open for newbies interested in contributing LGBT+ content to Wikimedia projects. We will create an atmosphere of learning and solidarity, so we will of course support each other in editing content and giving each other feedback. The main organizer will go around the room and check how people are doing and will give support wherever needed.

5. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

There will be a session in how to get more active in the LGBT+ user group as well as how to organize edit-a-thons around queer topics in their home communities. Participants will be invited to join future LGBT+-related events.

6. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

The event will follow Wikimedia Austria's friendly-space policy.

Impact

[edit]

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  1. Number of participants: 15 participants
  2. Number of of articles created or improved: 100+ new and improved articles (similar to how we did in previous LGBT+ projects such as in March 2019 in Tunis
  3. New and more activity from participants from Europe and North Africa in the Wikimedia LGBT+ user group
  4. Pictures from the event and from notable people at Europride uploaded to Wikimedia Commons

Resources

[edit]

What resources do you have? Include information on who is organizing the project, what they will do, and if you will receive support from anywhere else (in-kind donations or additional funding).

Wikimedia Austria will support the event through its rather small community budget. Food and accommodation and even travel and visa costs of some participants can be covered through this budget. Some participants will be able to pay for their travels themselves or through their chapters.

What resources do you need? For your funding request, list bullet points for each expense and include a total amount.

We urgently need an additional budget for travel and visa costs of people from North Africa and Eastern Europe who cannot pay for their own travels and who are not supported by local chapters or user groups to participate in this project. We also need additional resources for covering food, simple accommodation in a hostel and local travels in Vienna for all 15 participants of the project.
  • Travel and visa costs: 800 EUR
  • Food and accommodation: 978,38 EUR

  • Strong support Strong support I participated in the last edition at Tunis and this has further bridge the knowledge gap of LGBT contents and gave me a support mechanism which allowed making contributions in my local language Yoruba.
