Goals

[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

  • Yes. We are happy that we did meet our goals and even more than our initial expectations. More people were interested in this project due to its unique impact of documenting Old Tanzanian buildings-where most of these buildings are recognized by UNESCO as one of the World Heritage sites.

Outcome

[edit]

Please report on your original project targets. Please be sure to review and provide metrics required for Rapid Grants.

  • Please find the below table that summarizes the original targets as well as the achieved targets.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
1 in person editathon 2 with a series of at least 2 Wikidata online workshops (1 for training the trainers and 1 for all other members) We were able to do 1 in person editathon and 4 main online sessions that aimed at both raising awareness about the Told Cities project and explaining the expected outcomes and results of the project. More than that we were able to do one on one support for people who needed help on how to participate in this project. These were helpful sessions as they mind-opened the participants on what they were supposed to do. Goal was met.
Number of participants=At Least 25 participants (5 trainers plus 20 other participants) 35 participants registered to participate in this project, 27 Participants actively participated in this project where 11 were photographers who participated in this project by capturing the images of old buildings found at Stone town in Zanzibar and then uploading them to Wikimedia Commons. The second group of people were editors whose responsibilities were writing articles on the ancient buildings in Zanzibar, especially those that are recognized by UNESCO as one of the World Heritage Sites. The goal was met.
Number of new editors=At Least 20% of all participants 9 new editors joined our community through this project. Most of the people were motivated by the aim of the project as they said Tanzania has many notable things but aren’t documented well in Wikipedia even in Swahili Wikipedia itself, They said it was a good project to start with making a difference towards documenting countries notable things such as monuments and museums.
Number of Photos about Tanzanian heritage buildings to be uploaded into Wikicommons for the project=at least 200 photos We were able to capture 446+ photos Goal was met
At Least 100 wikidata items added/improved The first Wikidata training was conducted by the global facilitators (Yamen-Tunisia) and (Nassima-Morocco) amidst some challenging time in Tanzania that includes the death of President of Tanzania, few people participated the call (but was recorded for others who couldn’t make it during the training). Therefore participants are expected to join the follow up Wikidata training to learn on how to link the data from the created Swahili articles into Wikidata.. Due to delay in accomplishment of articles writing due to lack of references, the training will be rescheduled to update the Wikidata labels based on the Swahili Wikipedia articles written during this project. Goal was about 75% met.
Number of articles created or improved= At least 15 high quality articles about Tanzanian historic buildings and other heritage buildings recognized by UNESCO. At least 25 was created and improved We had a list of targeted Told Cities articles to be created that were not available in Swahili Wikipedia. That was our Goal target although participants were allowed to expand and improve any other articles related to Tanzania’s old buildings.
Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events)= At least 10 participants 17 participants about 17 participants were able to join our various programs around this project

Learning

[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?
  1. Internet support was a great catalyst for people to participate in this project.
  2. Good number of people who were interested to support and participate in this project was an encouragement to the team that it will be one of the sustainable projects in our country considering it was the first time for this project to run in our country.
  3. Great support by one of the Swahili Adiministarators (Ingo Koll) in reshaping the names of the Generally the project was successful in many ways
  4. The team was so cooperative to make all the success of this project.
  • What did not work so well?
  1. Lack of Categories slowed down the article writing process
  2. Despite the topics we were writing about to be notable for the sense of being recognized by UNESCO, there were scarcity/Lack of references to back up the articles on Swahili Wikipedia.
  3. Legal issues caused the photographers not to be allowed to capture the photos for some areas such as the State house of Zanzibar.
  4. Budget limitations led to a small number of photographers who were supported to capture this project's photos.
  5. Work more to establish Partnership with other organizational entities that share the same vision and mission to improve the efficiency of the projects results in Tanzania.
  • What would you do differently next time?
  1. Prepare/create new categories beforehand for topics lacking references
  2. Encourage Media people to cover heritage stories so that there should be availability of references
  3. Try to Engage the Swahili Research people to help with the vocabularies for some terms that aren’t easily translatable.
  1. We are working to register/legalize our user group so that we can have a wider range of access to work on more projects within the country without Legal barriers.
  2. Shifting to Annual grants will help us support more participants in different projects.
